Distraction-Proof Your Environment — Before going into a deep focus session, play defense: Put your phone on silent and close irrelevant apps. Your brain will thank you later. 📵💡 #DeepWork #Productivity
“we don’t need ever-more complicated algorithms deployed by ever-larger platforms. It’s enough to instead return to a conception of digital interaction that occurs on a much more human scale.”

We had an emoji dog breed quiz in my #DeepWork session recharge break. There was one that started with the 💩 emoji, I was convinced it was shih tzu but it turned out to be poodle. Once I confessed my error, loads of other people said they’d thought the same, only everyone except me was too polite to type it in the chat
I’m starting to get more of a feel for this paper. I went to a 9.30am #DeepWork morning kick start session and we were a group of just three, a masters student, a PhD student, and me. We agreed that academics must not be early risers 😹 Someone in the group introduced us to Goblin Tools, which helps you break tasks down into more manageable portions, so I’ve been playing with that a bit. I’ve been in a silent #DeepWork drop in, but now I’m going to a facilitated session where we set goals for the next two hours of focus
Your focus capacity can be expanded with practice. Going from 2 to 4-5 hours of deep focus per day can make you feel 3x faster. #10xSoftwareDelivery #DeepWork

In my #DeepWork session today we were asked to specify our favourite genre of music. What a monstrous question! Like being asked to choose between my children
I woken up with a horrible sinus headache, it’s responded a bit to painkillers and caffeine but I feel dopey and slow. I walked into town but I couldn’t muster up the energy for my usual power walk. I’ve got three #DeepWork sessions pencilled in for today to finish this article. I nearly said “try to finish this article”, but I’m not going try, I’m going to do. So there! Anyone feeling perkier than me this Thursday?
Well, I made some significant progress on my article in this morning’s #DeepWork flight… hoping that I can whip it into shape by the end of Thursday, which is my next working day. I hope my manager likes my acronym!
Mrs is having another eye test to see if she can wear glasses again after her eye op. So I'm doing something vaguely useful by reading #deepWork by #CalNewport in the hope of learning better.

I’m listening to a playlist compiled by Rich, one of my #DeepWork facilitators. Something tells me Rich and I are of a similar age… this playlist contains Basement Jaxx, Massive Attack, Moloko, The Shapeshifters, Goldfrapp… I’m loving it
I tried to connect to my #DeepWork session but my browser told me the page was having problems. Tried again. Nope. Started to panic thinking the site was down, as I struggle to work without it. Went to the FB group to ask if anyone else was having problems - nope. Mystery eventually solved: a certain little black cat had stepped on the airplane mode button and kicked me off Wi-Fi 🙄 #cats
Lunchtime. I’m finding this current article really slow-going, I’m bogged down in references and struggling to see how to structure it all. Someone in my #DeepWork session suggested I flip it around and just start writing, then find the references to support what I’m saying. So I think I’ll try that when I go back in. How’s your day going?
Just going into my first #DeepWork session of the day - well, actually it’s preparation for deep work, involving meditation, journaling and goal setting. Then I’ll get cracking on my next journal article. It will be about non-punitive spaces for offenders and the benefits of these #AmWriting #AcademicChatter #Criminology

Right! After a nice lunch I am about to go into an afternoon #DeepWork session. I’m really hoping to finish a first draft of my current article by the end of the day. See you on the other side!
After a productive afternoon of #DeepWork I’ve called it a day and I’m chilling out before my #breathwork session in an hour. Breath work is one of the things (along with exercise, meditation and journaling) that I try to do regularly to stay well despite having #bipolar disorder. I’m bound to relapse eventually - that’s just being realistic - but I want to put it off for as long as I can

Just about to go into my first #DeepWork session in a week. We’ll do some brief mindfulness practice, then some journaling, then set our intentions for our workday. I find the session incredibly helpful and try to join every day that I work from home. Later I’ll join a “deep dive” session of two 50 min block of focus with intention setting at the start, a mental break in between, and a decompress chat at the end. These really help me to structure my work day, I can’t recommend them highly enough
About to go into my #DeepWork morning session, my face is still as red as a strawberry from exercising which is kind of embarrassing
