The default should be that you can say something to someone publicly without pointing at them and shouting “hey, everyone, listen to what I’m about to tell so-and-so!”

(An @mention really shouldn’t be broadcast to everyone by default to begin with. That’s almost as bad as a quote tweet and I can’t really imagine why you’d use it unless you were calling someone out.)

@davesgonechina Unfortunately, this feature only works if everybody else sets their posting language properly.

If you only subscribe to English, and another person has their posting language sets to English but posts in a different language, you're still going to see posts you can't read.

This happens more often than you'd think because the posting language is the same as the interface language by default, and most people don't change their settings.

I don’t feel strongly. But I have a vague sense it would be more hygienic.

Ephemeral posts should be ephemeral—who knows what Mastodon will be like when users are 10x or 100x—and abandoned data can eventually become toxic.

Maybe expiry after 3 months, or 1-2 years? Any thoughts welcomed.
