Why on the Earth do you guys prefer to defederate from Mastodon servers that run by Gargon, Stux, and by someone who runs universeodon?
I mean hey, it's #Fediverse ! The idea is to be able to interact with other Fediverse instances.....why do you ruin it?
TBH, I had talked a while ago with both Gargon and Stux - I know them very well, what made you to defederate from them?
Very suspicious.
#fediverse #fedublock #defederate
I shall not name anyone but there was somebody shouting #Defederate
They have reasons.
There can be dangerous material on a server. An obvious example is Child Sexual Abuse Material (#CSAM).
At the heart of the #Fediverse is the idea that we each take responsibility for our actions.
And we all have tools to block and mute accounts and filter according to hashtags. Let's all make sure we can use them.
> "You can just move to another instance"
Except you can't, for the reasons already discussed.
> "But they are awful"
Okay, I agree, and? Adults can figure out what they do or do not read. You don't have to babysit them.
> "I don't want to see that on my timeline…"
Then block them and put a mute on the relevant keywords for yourself, and/or put a limit on them from your instance.
When you #defederate you are acting on your user's behalf and saying "you are not _allowed_ to _follow_ them."
I get it that folks are immediately suspicious of #Threads implementing ActivityPub.
But that is, after all, their right. It's an open standard.
Do I find it suspicious? Yes. Do I understand their motivations for doing it? No.
But we also have the ability to #defederate Threads if we want to.
That to me is one of the best reasons to use AP-based apps.
nostr is harmfull.
what would be the simplest and most effective way to #defederate from zuckerbergs #Threads ?
This thread has inspired me to reflect a bit on our process. I think one of our mistakes in the #SocialCoop discussion on whether to #defederate from #Facebook / Meta / Threads.net has been to try to put Limit vs. Suspend as options in the same questionnaire.
I think we could achieve a better consent process if we propose to LImit first, with the understanding that future proposals could cover pro-active Suspension.
I suggested it here: https://www.loomio.com/d/AZcJK6y2/discussion-support-the-anti-meta-fedi-pact/330

In case it isn't obvious, my desire to reside on a Mastodon instance that will proactively #defederate from the corporate internet and my desire to not have my ideas harvested for use by generative #AI aren't really separate things.
With 51% and then 56% of #socialcoop voting to #defederate Meta, but a block & a bylaw mean we'll actually federate or vote again, reminds me how #digitalsociocracy can empower those with the most free time (ie not working single parents), those who use English best (ie not maj. world), or those who can exploit rules & tools to suit themselves. In the end many donate time yet decisions often stay unmade. Or when they do, no-one takes ownership of them, so it's harder to cleanup/fix if a mistake.

For me, the BBC stating that ‘Almost every influencer will be hopping on Threads’ is reason enough for defederating from Meta’s instance. #defederate #BBC #PleaseNo
Poll closing soon on #socialcoop position regarding a preference to SUSPEND and #defederate from #Threads or LIMIT contact between instances. (A limit would make individual accounts on the two services accessible to each other on an opt-in basis.) Link to vote: (Loomio) https://www.loomio.com/p/etLGnr0z?page=1

If #Threads will implement #ActivityPub at all, I bet it'll be incomplete. Specifically it won't allow its users to migrate their accounts. Is that reason enough to #defederate? Absolutely!

Not forced to watch Fight Haven clips against your will ... YET
#instagram #threads #meta #defederate
@jdp23 @BlackAzizAnansi @greymatter I’ll deffo be blocking it, and asking my instance admins at absolutelyhar.am and Paktodon.Asia to #defederate from #Meta.
If I wanted to interact with the #facsists who camp out on FB, I’d be over there, and not here.
A few month ago, there were calls to #defederate #hachyderm because of some misunderstanding. There were torches, pitchforks, and blocks by users before the misunderstanding was cleared in less than 24h.
Today, people were calling to defedate #Lemmy's instance sh.itjust.works because someone created !thedonald. That community was banned in a few hours by the instance's admins.
People definitely don't need outrage-driven algorithms to be trigger-happy dumbasses.
Edit:
"The #Mastodon server admins who are preemptively promising to #Defederate #Threads are effectively guaranteeing that users on their instances will be isolated from a potential majority of users just like the ones I stopped bothering to read six years ago on #Facebook"
#mastodon #defederate #threads #facebook
@PaulaToThePeople I really don't understand why there is a #fedipact to #defederate #meta et. al. The #fediverse has open APIs, they could scrape the content anytime they want, without anyone even noticing... The #fediverse is about all kinds of people communicating, they should be allowed to communicated too!
