Today, someone blocked me on #Mastodon

Apparently questioning why someone is threatening to #defederated someone and also not knowing what that entails is enough to be blocked.

I thought this was supposed to be a nicer place... 🫤

can somebody explain to me what #federated and #defederated mean? in simple terms.

I don't really have a horse in the fight, but isn't the assertion that some people or whole instances be automatically walled off from the wider Fediverse sort of against the point?

In a world like this, it’d be a lot harder to see stuff from #defederated networks by default. So even if someone reshares content, it wouldn’t appear in the timeline by default. You’d have to manually opt in to see stuff from the server or be following the author of the reshared content to see it on your timeline.

This way you aren’t at the mercy of an admin to see the content.

With all this current talk of who should or should not #federate with whom, I have a very basic question:

What is the mechanism for a random Mastodon user to figure out which instances their instance (or any other instance) has #federated or #defederated with? Is there any interface or public data to expose that information? Or is it all a matter of rumor, side channels, and insider knowledge?

This is why it’s critically important during the #Reddit migration to direct Reddit refugees to a good instance. And I’m not sure what to suggest. Ideally something that’s #defederated from lemmy·ml, not too oppressive against civil posts, not tor-hostile (this rules out #beehaw). Otherwise the oppressive types within the #fedi will thrive.

The correct #Mastodon technical term is "#Silenced" not outright #Defederated

There is a significant technical difference between the two

If you're just getting on because it's a Saturday it might be hard to track down the threads where this distinction has been discussed

@pomstan I've got time to pull a bit more data today.

It turns out that the 40 instances I have #defederated have ~3220 stored accounts.

I'd assume that about half of them are not duplicates nor bots - and that's actually a quite optimistic estimate, given the numbers I pulled out from Gab a while ago.

So we're realistically talking of <1000-1500 actual people that have been defederated.

Given that the Fediverse hosts a bit less than 11 million accounts according to the latest number, it seems that I have defederated somewhere between 0.01% and 0.03% of it.

So where's the big loss? A quick look at the numbers seems to validate my hypothesis that the free speech extremist/white supremacist instances are nothing more than a rounding error when compared to the overall numbers of the Fediverse. A very loud minority, sure, but still an almost insignificant minority.

We'll just be fine without them.

Quite the opposite, we thrived while Twitter was drowning in trolls and alt-right shit. We were what most folks called a "nice place with friendly people" exactly because all the 4chan/Gab planets were spinning in another galaxy with all of their n/f/j slurs, memes, conspiracy paranoia and proto-fascist vocabulary.

Now that the sewage is trying to sip back throw the drain, it's just time to put another cap on it. There's a whole world outside of the alt-right niche - and, believe or not, that's actually the whole world. We definitely won't miss them.

Btw, I'm definitely not qualified to speak in the name of all the admins. I know that many of them don't want to have anything to do with anything that smells like alt-right and would be happy to block everything. From my side, I don't want to block everything. Diversity always makes people stronger, I've always been open to civilized confrontation of ideas and will always be, no matter how much disagreement we have on the ideas, as long as those discussions are *civilized*.

It's just that...for god's sake, can you folks hold your shit together when you post, preferably avoid racial and homophobic slurs, mob bullying techniques and unsolicited memes? What the hell is wrong with you folks, and the hell turned you into such monsters?

I am pondering putting up a #mastodon instance.

The main thrust is that it would be focused on hosting FOSS and similar technology folks.

To fund it I would allow corporate accounts that were encouraged to pay some amount so that the instance would be financially viable.

TOS would have a strict "no spam" clause (still working on the wording).

My question is, would I just get instantly #defederated and if so, how can I avoid that?

Dice dot camp folks--apparently we briefly #defederated from mastodon dot social the other day? Which means if you were following anyone on there (you almost definitely were), you're not any more, nor are those people following you.

You might want to take a moment to see if you need to reconnect with anyone important to you.

How can you tell if an instance was defederated? I left mstdn.plus yesterday due to the feeds not updating and some people are saying it was defederated. I made a post yesterday before I left that hasn't shown up on any public feeds either.

Hopefully they will never sign up for #Mastodon or the #Fediverse. If they do, whatever nazi instance that will have them will likely already be #defederated and us non-Fascists and #Antifascists will never have to see them.

If you do, you can mute or block them AND you can choose to block their whole instance.

They have the freedom of speech, but they everyone else has the freedom of association.

#Newsie is getting #defederated by some instances b/c it is harboring #transphobia and serial harassers.

But Newsie is also where indigenous journalist and inclusive Heathen accounts that I follow are at.

This system where—*surprise!*—the admin can turn out to be a total POS after all the good people already signed up is dysfunctional.

#Mastodon needs real accountability and community control of its instances, otherwise this will keep happening, and the #Fediverse will splinter.
