My local police equipment includes sniper rifles, AR-15-derived rifles, shotguns that can shoot through walls, drones, and a mobile command vehicle.

When people headed toward a shopping mall after a protest ended, police showed up in riot gear. Tear gas, zip ties, the whole deal.

My point is police have violence at their core, and there's no provocation too small or violent response too large for them.

They were ready to kill people who were walking to a mall.

The idea that police create safety is tough to defend.

First, what do we mean by safety? If we define it as secure food and shelter that cannot be taken, obviously police don’t provide safety.

If it means crime prevention, what do we mean by crime? Wage theft? Polluting the air? Those are great harms, and police don’t much pursue them.

If crime means stealing catalytic converters, police aren’t preventing that.

And so it goes.
