Despite the apparent increase in trade and investment flows, the world is undergoing a costly de-globalization process? The pandemic, geopolitical tensions, environmental concerns, and social unrest have all contributed to the erosion of trust and cooperation among countries. The consequences of de-globalization could be lower growth, higher inequality, and more instability in the global system.

People are just becoming more aware of the fact that it is not very clever to have all of your eggs put in one basket, particularly if that basket is far away from your immediate reach.

With #SVB having both silicon valley and bank in its name, it is a reminder of a dislocation in the ongoing "digitization" of society that will impact not only the #fediverse but all things digital

its the unfinished business of inter-operating the "informal" and purportedly "optional" digital spaces that are now dominated by #bigtech with the formal and non-optional digital spaces developed by financial intermediaries, other industries and the public sector

The "move fast and break things" tech sector has clear ambitions here, from the far-out #libra ideas of Meta, to their involvement in web/mobile payment protocols and the general pitching of #fintech

How that plot will unfold going forward is anybody's guess but, imho, one structural feature will stand out: online life will be ever more aligned with public sector borders. The old-time "lender of last resort" must become the digital lender of last resort

for better or worse, #deglobalization is in the DNA of "web 3.0"
