@protonmail is fun, but that's too much privacy for me - I want to be able to use any email client I want.

#Fastmail has a lot of useful features missing from #gmail as well as email aliases and masked emails.

Oh, and I tried #OnMail as well. But then I realized that EdisonMail (the creator of OnMail) was bought by a data-crawling company =D

ELI5 why there don’t seem to be any alternatives to Gmail and Google Calendar that are at least as good as that combo? I’ve tried Proton and Fastmail, and both are *radically* worse at search and missing features I use in Gmail daily. If search engines like Kagi can give us good search with privacy, why hasn’t someone done good email+calendar with privacy?

I would love to switch, but not enough to lose functionality (I’m not seeking a debate on that point).

I really want to stop using Google services, but as I have a Verizon Pixel it seems practically impossible. I can't OEM unlock, which means I can't root or flash a custom ROM. I assume I just have to save up for a new phone. I'll keep looking for a way though. If anyone knows one I'd appreciate it.🙏🏻

A sign that my #degoogle adventure is working…I’m getting ads inserted into my podcasts that are in languages I don’t speak and for businesses in other states.

A bit conflicted.

A) they obviously need the money to pay for any kind of SW support.
B) they don't deserve it because they don't even bother with regular android security updates let alone latest version. This is disrespectful.
C) No source code for HibyOS. Is that even legal?
D) I need a capable, dedicated device solely for listening to music with.
E) There really aren't that many viable options
F) I could just be a baller & pay someone in the #LineageOS or #/e/ community to port

Here in 2023 I keep getting sexually explicit spam CC-ing me and many other people through #GoogleApps.

#Google has the technology to automatically weed out 99% of this behavior: Is it a new account? Is it sent to a bunch of people at once? Does the AI algorithm detect sexually explicit content? If so, it should be an easy block.

They have the technology. They just choose not to use it because more eyeballs makes them more money. I'm tired of it. That's why I'm #degoogling.

I'm no longer sure who it was on here, but some one recommended organic maps app as a privacy friendly alternative to Google maps, built on #openstreetmaps I've been trying it out the last 3 days and it is really brilliant. So 🙏 to whoever it was.

I think the next step in my #degoogle effort is starting to take direction. I've been looking at various #email options and I'm leaning towards #Zoho mail. They have the privacy/security stuff you would expect, but also seem to have all of the stuff I'm looking for to handle multiple addresses from multiple domains in one place. And cheap!

Anyone have any feedback, pro or con, about Zoho?

When you say "self-hosted" do you mean really hosting it yourself? If so, then probably #NextCloud. I've seen a couple of videos online that use #Plex, but that seems like overkill.

If you're not really hosting it yourself, but simply want to #deGoogle, then a few years ago I tried cluster.co for uploading and sharing photos with friends and family for a vacation trip, and it seemed to work pretty well.
