@atthenius Sounds promising, though it's hard for me to be more than cautiously optimistic. I'll try to catch future sessions and contribute ( may be too lofty, as much as I'd like to see the asthmaway demolished), but like you, I want to approach this with an open mind.

Good morning!

The NY Times reports that the is planning to spend up to $130 million to mitigate pollution resulting from :

Unfortunately, the plan – which amounts to little more than planting trees, adding air filtration to schools choked by the Cross-Bronx Asthmaway, and an "asthma treatment program" – is inadequate. No mention of , or the solution that'd work best – tearing that POS down.

@straphanger This just brings to mind that LaGuardia Airport transit study the Port Authority released days ago that sought to preserve future HIGHWAY WIDENING.

Too many cities are addicted to endless highway expansion, and the cure is to quit cold-turkey.

@cityobs I wonder how many other "replacement", "maintenance", etc. projects bundle highway widening boondoggles into them? This is often how they're done, under the guise of "maintenance".

Or they use some other flowery language like "auxiliary lane" or "managed lane" or some such.

All should be fiercely resisted.

@vanshnook There are plenty of reasons not to miss the bird site, but this is quite tame.

I don't think you can deck the highways with value capture – probably can't raise enough money that way (and it's arguably less expensive and more beneficial to instead).

@samuelitooooo See, only one of those is truly poisonous though – the other is the antidote.

Real "muscular infrastructure" that would relieve the Holland Tunnel: a rail connection between Hoboken and Atlantic Terminal via Fulton/WTC.
The obsession with endless highway expansion is akin to setting money on fire, but hey, MUSCULAR!! 🤦🏽‍♂️

@urbanistorg Jokers again, convinced that endless highway expansion will work THIS...TIME. Just scrap this waste of money and reappropriate to transit improvements. Much better ROI!

@BrentToderian A tale as old as time. Unfortunately, stubbornness regarding endless highway expansion is also just as old, because THIS time, one...more...lane...will "fix" traffic! 🤦🏽‍♂️

We need to and reclaim these spaces!
