Yesterday, I went to see an old friend’s band play at Pier 23 in San Francisco. HowellDevine plays delta blues yet brings their own fresh rhythmic feel to the music. I’ve been playing Mississippi John Hurt’s rendition of #LonesomeValley on repeat for the past couple of days. I’ve heard many versions of this tune, but there is just something about the bouncing bass line under those droning middle strings. It’s a really simple approach, yet it stands out as having such a unique sound.

This, along with the increasing use of electric instruments, distinguishes the sound of the #ChicagoBlues from its predecessor: the #DeltaBlues (from the Mississippi Delta, where a lot of people migrated away from).

As I understand it, the Delta blues is more introspective, and its instrumentation is simpler, often a single musician singing amazingly while playing the guitar.
