Toujours dans un peu de mal à rentrer dedans (le narrateur gamin) mais ça commence à devenir vraiment intéressant. J’ai peur par contre de pas le terminer d’ici la deadline du club de lecture du boulot

Kingsolver won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel . Did she win it because it’s a clever modern take on David Copperfield, or because the story is an insight into our time? What exactly are we judging here?

I’m reading Demon Copperhead and I’ve only just realised that it’s based on David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. Somehow, I feel cheated. I hated Dickens in school - melodramatic claptrap - but it does explain the ‘serial’ feel of the book.
It’s a clever book, the characters are credible, going beyond characterisation (another of my pet Dickens’ peeves.) And the writing is beautiful, wonderful imagery etc.

I know there’s nothing new under the sun and all tales are variations on a theme. This book, though, barely even changes the characters’ names.

I’m so disappointed. I don’t know what to think. And I’ve lost interest in finishing the book.
Have you read it?
What are your thoughts?

I've just finished _Demon Copperhead_ by Barbara Kingsolver, and it was great. Hard work, and painful to read in parts, but a really good book.

we’ve been on vacation for the past week, the last bit at a tiny lake house in rural Ohio: hammock, shady tree, nothing else to do but read.

My 2023 reading goal is 10,000 pages and I plowed through a 1,000 of them in the past week, Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead a significant chunk of that.

it was really fucking good. Over 600 pages, she builds a voice for her character, and stays true to it without once veering into cliche.

Even though, the Mountain Goats fan I am, I kept spotting themes and stories that he explores in his lyrics: Fall of the High School Running Back, the Alpha Couple songs, really all Tallahassee.

so yeah, I fucking loved it. and most importantly, it’s given me a newly found sympathy and hope for the people we coastal elites are told to sneer at and hate.

Very much an “I see what you did there, Barbara Kingsolver” moment at this point in “Demon Copperhead”.

There’s a lot to unpack here.

“So she sat up the rest of the night making notes and downloaded David Copperfield to reread on the flight back. ‘It was a masterclass,’ she says. ‘Learning all the tricks that he used ...’

“She finally had her way into writing about the “lost boys” of Appalachia, where 40% of children are raised by someone else, either because their parents are dead, in prison or too incapacitated by addiction.”

Love this interview: “I understand why rural people are so mad they want to blow up the system,” she says. “That contempt of urban culture for half the country. I feel like I’m an ambassador between these worlds, trying to explain that if you want to have a conversation you don’t start it with the words, ‘You idiot.’”

“I think I maybe have a better understanding of women than Dickens,” she hoots. “I’ll claim that.”

Has anyone else read Lessons In Chemistry?

Because I'm about 100 pages in and just. Meh. Not sure I understand the fuss. I don't know what I'm missing.

Except maybe I just came off of reading Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver and whoa. Deep and dark and rich.

Maybe I just need to come back to the chic lit later.

I'm sure I'm alone. And that's OK. Sometimes I need to be in the right headspace for a book.

Finished reading Barbara Kingsolver’s this afternoon. Powerful stuff and I loved it. Tempted to read David Copperfield now to compare and contrast, as I haven’t read any since school. Great Expectations was one of the set texts for O level English Lit back in my day and I surprised my teenage self by becoming gripped by it

A few people said the main character here was not developed in an interesting way, or that there were too many pages or people in the novel, and those people and I will never like the same books. This is a fricking masterpiece. It broke my heart and I never wanted it to end app.thestorygraph.com/books/7c
