Nicias, or Nikias (c. 470-413 BCE), was a wealthy Athenian politician and general during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BCE). He became established as a prominent political leader of the aristocratic faction in Athenian politics and generally recommended a cautious line in opposition to the more hawkish anti-Spartan attitudes of popular leaders such as Cleon and Alcibiades.https://www.worldhistory.org/Nicias/ #Athens #Brasidas #Demosthenes #History

Excellent episode of BBC #InOurTime, about the oratorical strenghts of #Demosthenes.
"It was in the 4th century BC, in Athens, that #Demosthenes delivered these speeches against the tyrant Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great ... Demosthenes feared his fellow citizens were set on appeasement..."

Demosthenes (c. 384 - 322 BCE) was an Athenian statesman who famously stood against Macedonian king Philip II and whose surviving speeches have established him as one of the greatest patriots and powerful orators from ancient Greece. He is not to be confused with the 5th century BCE Athenian general of the same name.
