Lex Friedman Podcast with Bhaskar Sunkara.

I watched the whole thing from start to finish and I loved this.
I'd seen clips of Lex before but hadn't really watched.
I align pretty closely with Bhaskar, I do think he represents a good majority of people who self-identify as democratic socialists, at least in the west. I definitely disagree with him on the functionality of the state and the level at which it has control over society, and even in a fully democratic system, having a state still implies power above oneself, and that is something i fundamentally disagree with, the state should not exist in the way we see it today, even in an ideal world. Perhaps I am viewing this on a slightly longer time scale, and Im not saying I wouldn't support DemSoc candidates, I just feel like its whole scope and scale are taken with a much more big L, Liberal, perspective, and while that can be useful in getting messages across to generally Liberal audiences, which he criticizes AOC for doing, which yes, duh. she does that. but so did he. Not saying that wasnt expected here because of the depths of the conversations but its viewing the world with a Liberal hegemonic worldview and taking that as inately positive.

A person cannot be free without full bodily autonomy, and the right to free expression of any sort. Having a state, restricts freedom, and through that state apparatus, beuracracies are formed, Democratic Socialism, is in its most charitable view, be seen as a within the rules of the game, mainstream attempt to get Socialist ideas more popular, until they can take a majority control. This is fine, but its a very weak response to the impacts on people's daily lived experiences, especially in a modern faux-democratic bourgoise capitalist society. Fighting for electoral victories and influencing policy are important, but at least in America, it has been shown time and time again that the will of the people is not the primary concern of the state currently as is. Therefore anti-democratic measures have been taken. Reform cannot be the saviour of a system so broken. Speaking in such non-chalante fashions about the strife of the working class in opposition to capitalist hegeonomic authoritarianism is so narrow minded and frankly shortsighted that it feels as if the person believing in this system has to accept that it can work within the base framework that it is being proposed in. He even speaks about this in the Mao and Stalin sections, which yes were both horrible leaders.

Reform at least through traditionalist Liberal means is neither plausible nor possible in the United States of America as it exists today. No amount of democratic socialist voting at the polls will ever amount to anything because that would never be allowed to occur. If you believe that it is possible, please see all the times the US govenment had elected left/socialist leaders killed throughout the past 70 years. This isnt counting the times that we have deposed people who even slightly oppose American Capitalist Hegemony. This, Democratic Socialism, is at best a utopian alt-future in which America isnt the country it is and radically changes its viewpoint.

The only way socialism happens in the US is through direct action and organizing. And probably the other R word. The idea that in the modern US, Democratic Socialism, at least openly, has any chance, of being actualized is 0. We all know this is true. Monied Interests, the Military Industrial Complex, American Imperialism, the Intel Agencies, The world Reserve currency, yeah. Its Revolution or Domination, and if you believe the state should have any role after, you are literally just repeating the sins of the past out of ego.

I did really enjoy the conversation, and there are things that I do fundamentally agree with Bhaskar on, the problem really is in the establishment of those systems and the process in which it will be carried out post-reform/revolution, which will always lean back towards Capital, Liberal Institutionalism and Corruption.
