Today is the would-be 83rd birthday of computer scientist Dennis Ritchie, the most underrated person in computer science. Dennis Ritchie produced the C programming language, worked on several operating systems, and designed the core of UNIX, an operating system family that runs on most computers on Earth and all computers on Mars. If you combine C and UNIX-like systems together, Dennis Ritchie has had a direct influence on over 99.998% of all current computers. Unfortunately, he is not well known, as Steve Jobs took most of the credit (not crediting Ritchie for the majority of what MacOS, iOS, iPadOS, etc. is built on) along with others who didn't mention him enough.

Hard to whittle that down to 7, on the bubble:

- The C Programming Language
- The Crucified God
- The Upside Down Kingdom
- The Little Schemer
- Think and Grow Rich
- The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind
- Strength to Love

It is now known that Dennis Ritchie did not submit his PhD thesis. But there is another mystery that this paper, authored by David F. Brailsford, Brian W. Kernighan and William A. Ritchie, looks at:

"[H]ow was a long and typographically complicated mathematical thesis produced at a very early stage in the history of computerized document preparation?"

"The DMR thesis, draft copies of which have now been found, represents what is typographically one of the most sophisticated math dissertations of the 1960s, perfect placement of sub/superscripts and abundance of Greek letters and math symbols, and the uniformity from version to version. Did he hire the best professional typist in Cambridge to help create such a close-to-perfect document? Or could he have somehow tapped into new technologies that would allow him to do things that other students couldn’t do?

Experts are clear that computers were not advanced enough to have been able to aid Dennis in January 1968. Other experts are clear that the dissertation draft document could not have been typed by hand, the typography is too uniform and too perfect. There has to be an answer, but we have not found it yet.

So this website is dedicated to learning about Dennis Ritchie’s doctoral thesis and about the intellectual, social and cultural background environment during his graduate school and early Bell Labs years, 1964-1968. We are sharing the information/evidence/observations/opinions we find here."

Well I was just being provocative when I said they lied. It was light hearted.

I was just thinking of all the other people who laid the ground work though.

It's like no one thinks of the guys who created the Kernel that Apple build all their Aqua on top of to make .

No one remembers when they talk about Apple using to build their apps.

I'd just like people to see where the real credit lies. Where the brainwork happened.

Un día como hoy, 12 de octubre de 2011, fallece Dennis Ritchie, una de las personalidades más importantes en la historia de la computación moderna. Sin sus aportes, el mundo de la computación tal como lo conocemos hoy, simplemente no existiría.
