I know the words ‘would you like to listen to my podcast’ chill the blood like no other, so forgive me…

It’s a scripted comedy, centring around the thoughts and stories of Sir Desmond Stirling, best-selling author of horror stories. Some episodes are stand-alone while others are chapters of longer stories.

If double entendres make you laugh, then Sir Desmond will give you a big one…

Dennis Wheatley's 1933 novel Such Power Is Dangerous has no occult elements but plenty of classic Wheatley features - an over-the-top conspiracy theory, a bizarre convoluted plot, lots of paranoia and ludicrously but delightfully excessive villains.

And it has another feature familiar to Wheatley aficionados - an intense dislike of much of the modern world.

Great fun.

There's probably quite a few readers who have never heard of Dennis Wheatley, a very popular prolific historical fiction and occult fiction writer who died in 1980. A few of his books were made into films, such as The Devil Rides Out and To The Devil A Daughter. My favourite Dennis Wheatley book is Strange Conflict.

The eccentric Wheatley's own life story makes fascinating reading. Here's just a snippet of his life and career.

‘s ‘They Used Dark Forces’ is a novel in which Hitler and the Nazis are unambiguously evil, yet Wheatley takes every opportunity to rehabilitate Mussolini (cleaned up his country, shame he got involved in the war) Franco (kept the communists out) and Goering (fine airman, proud German, fanatically anti-communist, not into anti-semitism).

I found ‘They Found Atlantis’ because I need ALL the . Here it is in its natural habitat, next to ‘s own foray into the genre, the Maracot Deep.

‘I’ve not tasted a hock so fine since I dined with Hermann Goering’ oh Dennis Wheatley … Nazi name-dropping AND wine snobbery.

Dennis Wheatley’s The Ka of Gifford Hillary (1956), one of the “black magic” novels for which he was most famous. While there is no black magic as such in this book there are certainly supernatural, or at least paranormal, forces at work here.

An excellent occult thriller with some genuine horror and some sleaze.

Wheatley was truly one of the great thriller writers.
