I watched a DVD recently, where the character woke up, went to the bathroom, brushed their teeth without using toothpaste, then swished some mouthwash around in their mouth, then swallowed it.

Is this standard operating procedure anywhere in the world?

I thought you brushed *after* eating, typically used toothpaste, and most mouthwashes should be spat out.

I bought a 2 pack of dental scraper picks a while back. Did this to reduce need to go to dentist for cleaning during this pandemic. I’ve learned that a good scrapey clean is best followed by multiple brushes a day. Not all the brushes need toothpaste. Sometimes I can’t get the energy to brush, so I do need scrape now and again.

So proud of our Dental Hygiene team for hosting the annual CDHA Student Professional Association Regional Conference over the weekend attended by dental hygiene students from around NorCal! Half of the presenters were Dugoni School/University of the Pacific DH alums who volunteered to share their experiences with students. Thank you to the event organizers and attendees!

My favourite TikTok dentist (@themamadentist) is on today’s episode of the Struggle Care podcast. If you are someone who has ever struggled with dental hygiene, or are someone like me, who feels like I never got a good foundation of how to take care of my teeth, check them out on TikTok & the podcast.

If you leave plaque or hard plaque (calculus/tartar), it IRRITATES the gums and makes them bleed more easily! The gums become red and angry. This is why you may bleed during a dental cleaning because we are removing the soft and hard plaque from along and under the gum line.

I recommend flossing nightly, so you remove the debris from in between your teeth after eating all day. Plaque is a combination of food and bacteria. It’s soft and easy to remove. If you leave it for a few days it will start to calcify and harden on your teeth. That’s when you cannot remove it yourself & it has to be removed by a dental hygienist at your dental visit.
