To be clear, this is not my experience. I live outside Denver in a quiet neighborhood. My boyfriend and I live in a spacious 4-bedroom house with a basement apartment attached. That said, it's interesting to hear a tourist's perspective of visiting Denver proper.

Although homelessness and drug epidemics are issues in all cities across the United States, Denver's situation is particularly alarming and in-your-face. As I walked and drove through downtown Denver, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed, wondering how such scenes could be happening in America.

During my visit, I witnessed two little girls standing with their mother in front of a restaurant at 10 am on a Tuesday. Seeing them made me wonder why they weren't in school and what kind of lives they would have in the future. Even though I have always enjoyed visiting Union Station, my son warned me against going to the parking garage, comparing it to a "zombie apocalypse." Despite finding street parking, my experience in Denver left a lasting impression.

Let me be clear that I do not blame the homeless for my negative perception of Denver. Instead, I empathize with them and believe that they need help. However, I can't help but question why such a situation exists in the greatest country in the world.

While I have visited Denver before, I don't see myself returning except to see my son. Going forward, I plan to stay in one of the nearby small towns in Colorado. My personal favorite has always been Estes Park.
