💗 This profile of 5280 High School, Colorado’s only recovery high school, makes my heart grow.
"(O)ne of 43 nationwide, (t)hese secondary schools are designed for students who are recovering from substance use disorder and might also be dealing with related mental health disorders. The Denver school opened in 2018 as a public charter school that today enrolls more than 100 students annually."

Two world-class divers who began their careers at #CasaBonita. One traveled the world to dive up from 120 feet and another became "the belly-flopping phenomenon known as Professor Splash."

Hands-on education + helping refugees = two excellent causes taken on by DU's Ready for American Hospitality program.
"While the program — established in 2012 — feels good, it also garners results. Representatives from the United Nations, the U.S. State Department and Refugee Council USA recognized Ready for American Hospitality as a crucial resource for resettled refugees, DU officials said.
"Once they’ve completed the program, 86% of the Ready for American Hospitality students over the years gained employment and 90% meet a 90-day job retention rate at that first job, according to DU."

A sad new word to add to my vocabulary: swatting. “Swatting is when someone makes a prank call to police claiming an emergency and provides a real address for officers to respond to.”

I love the Denver Museum of Nature and Science's new mobile offering, the Curiosity Cruiser:
“We interviewed more than 300 people statewide and the feedback we got was, ‘We love the museum and we love going, but if you can come to us I promise we’re going to love you a lot more,’ ” said Daniel Ville Rodriguez, manager of community engagement at DMNS. “So it’s an appendix of the museum.”

Shame on #DenverPost for running this on page 7. Nothing says “normalizing gun violence” like burying stories on gun violence. The Denver Post needs to be reminded of this the next time they run an editorial on how we should address the epidemic if #gun violence in our country.
You can let them know how you feel with a letter to the editor (250 word limits sent to here: openforum@denverpost.com

From the article: In Colorado, (women) are also the new face of the labor movement.
While organized labor leadership in the U.S. has traditionally identified as male and white, Colorado’s leaders are “increasingly female and diverse,” said Marcela Salazar, spokesperson for United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7, the state’s largest private sector union. Her union elected Kim Cordova as the first woman of color to be president in 2009, and she still fills that position today.
“Unlike the corporate leadership structure, labor is unique because presidents must be elected by their membership, which can represent tens of thousands of people,” Cordova said. “More women labor presidents means that our members increasingly see that strong women get things done.”
Damn right we do. 💪

@QED we're also looking at cancelling print version of #DenverPost - $1825/yr buys a lot of things, and the paper has gotten smaller & smaller in many ways. A shame really.
From #denverpost:
When #Colorado lawmakers return to the Capitol Monday, they will do so in historic fashion.
A record number of women will fill state House and Senate seats — a majority, making Colorado the second state in the country to hit that mark. The state will have the largest LGBTQ caucus of any legislature in the country... And for the first time in the state’s history, the House’s top three leadership positions will all be held by women.
💪 We can do it.

Dan Ward, a Libertarian candidate, denies he "spoiled" the race in Colorado's new district in favor of the Democrat. “I just wanted to flick my thumb at the two-party system,” he said, adding that the Republican, “probably cost herself the election.”
I flick more than my thumb at the idea that third parties "spoil" elections or "wreck" parties. If the parties weren't wrecked already, they wouldn't be scared of a third choice.

2/ (#journalism)
The newest increase raises the price for home delivery of the #DenverPost to more than $5/day. The cover price is only $3, which leads me to believe that the parent company is deliberately trying to kill the print version (esp. since a digital sub is only $16/month). This seems to be a continuation of Alden's hallmark job slashing.
I know #newspapers are in trouble everywhere, but deliberately trying to kill part of your own brand seems like a pretty poor marketing strategy.

1/ I took a sad but necessary step this week in canceling my print subscription to the #DenverPost.
As a #journalism grad I've always believed in supporting local newspapers--in fact up until this week I subscribed to print versions of 3 papers (incl. the Sunday NYT), and have digital subs for 3 others.
But ever since "vulture" capital firm Alden Global bought the DP the amount and quality of content has declined markedly. Meanwhile their print subscription prices have gone through the roof...
