When I was a kid our local supermarket had their own deposit-refund system for wine bottles. Sadly, the supermarket was sold to a big chain and the idea was lost.
Now a German organic winery fill their wine into returnable standard 0.5-litre beer bottles with crown caps. The empty bottles can be returned at vending machines in almost any supermarket.
Sometimes things can be so easy!

Hugely irritated by the fuss around the proposed Deposit Return Scheme in Scotland. The Scottish Government (me!) first announced we were going ahead with this in May 2019!!!

It’s not as if it has been sprung on an unsuspecting industry. There’s no unreasonable looming deadline that has appeared out of nowhere. This just looks like foot dragging

@davidh Er. A deposit scheme should be moving bottles from recycling to reuse.
In the 1980s a Newcastle Brown Ale White Flint bottle averaged 11 trips before it was recycled.
Now it will take a while to reestablish reusable bottles but that should be the aim. The reusable bottles were a bit heavier than the single trip ones supermarkets insisted upon.
(And there is no kerbside glass recycling in E.g. Highlands and Aberdeenshire).

Whilst fully supportive of efforts to increase recycling the introduction of the poorly thought out deposit return scheme in Scotland where there is already kerbside recycling seems to be introducing an unnecessary level of complication and cost.
