Today's #vinyl is Deserta's "Black Aura My Sun". A contender for my favorite album of 2020.
This album hovers somewhere between #shoegaze and #synthwave; a beautiful multilayered wall of sound. Matt Doty's vocals are a whisper. I couldn't tell you what he's saying, despite having listened to this album repeatedly. All the same, these songs feel steeped in nostalgia. The guitar on the lead track "Hide" swoops in like a jet plane doing loops in and out of the song. "Be So Blue" feels like an homage to Flock of Seagulls. Something about the tuning/production of Doty's guitar makes every song feel like it's swirling out of a misty memory of what the 1980s was supposedly like. 😂
