Starting a #DesignSystem or wondering what the next phase looks like for your existing one?
@ignaciaorellana and I are going to be running a 1 day design system strategies workshop at this year’s Converge in Manchester.
https://zeroheight.com/events/converge/workshop/
Here’s what we’ll cover:
What are the specific problems YOUR design system needs to solve?
Who are your users and what do they need?
Who do you need to work with?
What are your opportunities and blockers?

If you need another good reason to visit Edinburgh in the Autumn, this could be it! Two days for the name of one "Design System Day" on 10 and 11 October 2023. A community led event in search of keynote speakers, workshop leads and break out session hosts. Have fun!

Developing a focus style for a themeable design system.

Deleted my Instagram account earlier today. I was barely using it.
Had been considering deleting my Twitt... X account too. But, decided to just keep it dormant (for now). My profile and pinned tweet basically just link here, so it's essentially just a promo for my Mastodon account 🙂.
Gotta say, I was a bit disappointed to see so many #DesignSystem friends being very active on X, when I briefly logged in to update my profile. I had really hoped most of that community would have migrated here.
Had to course correct my colleague's idea to name colors with https://www.color-name.com/ today: don't do this in a design system! Define clearly constrained palettes instead, ideally with the same lightness per step across palettes. This will help you keep your color count in check as well as help with understanding what kind of color you're dealing with in the code.
(And keep that gray/grey consistent: use one or the other, not both …)
I just left this quote in a Jira ticket to do some work, where I proposed a correction to pull something into line with the design system:
> “And some things that should not have been designed were signed-off. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the Design System passed out of all knowledge.”
Business Analyst said something like “That means all the others are wrong, stay consistent for now.”
😐😑😐

I wrote a piece on designing accessible buttons for your design system

I've written a list of considerations designers need to make when documenting button components in their design system

Very cool, the W3C Design System refers to our GOV.UK Design System heavily - both in design and guidance. For example they link to our form validation guide (which I helped write) here:

Who would have thought linking to another Web page was so difficult… 🤷♂️

Since Popover API is not widely supported yet, it is a challenge to show a Toast or Notification component on top of a Dialog element. In our Baklava #designsystem we only could just give a prop to the developer to force using polyfilled version when they need to show a toast. Any better ideas? #webcomponents #HTML #CSS https://github.com/Trendyol/baklava/pull/633

My latest #DesignSystem take is that the system itself should not reuse its own components only services and mixins.
I'm excited to share an extended article that introduces our #OpenSource #designsystem named Baklava. Current web implementation uses #webcomponents powered by #lit. It's a big challenge yet big fun to manage an open-source project and a design system in a large company(1500+ IT people) like Trendyol.

Fantastic intro to creating a #designsystem from #figma Well worth a watch, and not too long!
Je continue l'exploration de mon canva de #designsystem avec le de la sujet la création de cours.

Looking at how the GOV.UK Design System is iterating their contribution model.

Just found this Figma plugin that lets you edit multiple styles at the same time. Really handy for developing colour palettes or if you’re doing something in your design system, like changing fonts https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/818203235789864127
