As a designer/developer, design tokens make perfect sense to me. Much in the same way as variables or functions in code. Shared values reduce repetition and foster consistency.

As an information architect, I’m finding lots of flaws in how they’re created. Poor taxonomies kill the concept.

Design tokens are the basic styles which make up a design system. Each heading style could be defined as a design token, or each colour swatch, or each spacing value, and so on.

They can be synced directly from Figma into a codebase and are a good way of maintaining consistency between multiple applications.

There’s a big part of me that sees a future design tool that blends Figma and Weblow for making design tokens / design systems. Code + editable vector graphics + images = real-time browser and mobile OS rendering… Right now it’s hacking something custom for Figma. Not optimal. Figma Tokens Studio is a good start, but feels slow. And has a high overhead. #designtokens

Up late playing with getting #DesignTokens to display in #StorybookJS. I am quite happy with the results so far.

Next step is to get the #Figma layer information outputted as and HTML template somehow into #StorybookJS as well.

I do like where this is going.

Using #DesignTokens should make things easier for you and your team. So please in the name of the deity or celebrity of your choice keep them as simple as possible. Especially if you are using Alias tokens.
