I’m apparently getting into it with #cryptobros apparently because I said the cardinal sin that #blockchain doesn’t make sense for everything and that #ActivityPub and the #fediverse is a better approach. There’s this #Deso blockchain based social media and I can’t help but ask many questions about it and other #cryptocurrency options. I got back on Diamond today (the #twitter arm of the DeSo chain) and it feels like it's been maturing since I was last on it last fall...
Anyone have any thoughts on it?

It's not that bad! There's not as much #crypto stuff as I had been promised, still more of that on #Nostr and #Deso. Not as much #Twitter-style clout-chasing as you #Fediverse nerds sealioned about either. It's actually very Fedi-like but with Twitter's sense of humor. I like the choose-your-own algo feeds too. #mastodon or #calckey should steal that!

I think that #DESO is a little nicer in this regard because your client worries about how to publish your posts, you just log in with your private key.

On the other hand, it has centralized servers that sometimes go down, and cause lost transactions.

I suppose relays make #Nostr more decentralized.

So I created a #Nostr.. thing.. I think. Not real sure how to share it.. it's complicated.

I say that as a guy who mines #crypto, and who set up #Deso without a problem.

Instead of instances there are relays and you can publish to as many as you want.. I think?

But you can't edit posts, or even delete them it seems. And images are an afterthought, being hosted on whatever service the client provides?

@rizzn social media does make a lot of data, it's probably not really worth it to store all the content on-chain, esp images. AFAIK #Deso still relies on off-chain cloud providers to store content.

I had contemplated setting up a Mastodon server for our community but am instead looking at #web3 #Decentralized #SocialMedia solutions.

To summarize: #DeSo claims to be the platform for unlimited social networks with unlimited storage and unlimited portability. But it is the social network and everyone of these "independent" social networks is just a view on this system.

And for quite some time, the creators won't be making money off those platforms. Because it is just the same model as everywhere else, but without the reach.

Most of the social networks advertised there have no visible people or companies behind, either.

But #Web3 #DeSo is all about revenue: "You too can make six figures with your posts!"

Yes, dear gold diggers, but the shovel salesman will make even more than you ever will. (And, you will provide value for a questionable system.)

And there is no technical reason why the massive overhead of #blockchain is necessary. The value added is just the buzzwords. That may work, but is not a game changer.

I.e., they are all one social network, just with different UIs. That's not revolutionary. We have that with third-party apps on #TradSo. Nothing new except the packaging.

First of all, #deso is the only #blockchain that can handle infinite state, according to their makers. Unlike traditional blockchains, which are limited to finite amounts. And everyone can become a node and keep a copy of that #inifinite amount of storage. Says the PR.

@kfx the fediverse is very culturally opposed to crypto. The #cryptocurrency hashtag is mostly people celebrating number-go-down and Ponzi #FUD. I use #Deso if I want to talk to people who actually use #web3
