24 February 2023 - Nothing particular to the word “Dance" - I wrote this for this for the letter D.

Rapper, singer, poet, writer, podcaster, and thinker #Dessa is everywhere right now, online, on stage, on your bookshelf. I hadn’t heard of her back in the aughts when I found her compelling #hiphop debut ep “False Hopes” on a browse through the late, great independent music outlet cdbaby.

Dessa is a wordsmith, and nowhere is it more evident than in “Fire Drills,” from her album “Chime,” in which, in a feminist declaration as deft and defiant as #PattiSmith’s “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine,” she proclaims “Tell Patient Zero he can have his rib back.”

@phoenix I first encountered #Dessa as the support act at a #WelcomeToNightVale live performance in Melbourne.

She was the support act. I was sitting about 3 or 4 rows back. At one point she jumped off stage into the audience and was standing balanced on the backs of two seats, just above me.

Wearing a mini dress & combat boots and her enormous hoop earrings.

I fell hard and have never got up since.

@yesterdaychild I did not realise what this was at first, got very excited and somehow imagined that #Dessa and #XiaoZhan were on the same bill at an actual festival.

I had a minor conniption.

If you saw me connipting in the replies, no you didn't.

Went to a gig last night solo and as it was last time it was a meditative experience. Maybe I'll write a zine about it.
