Fundamentally, if someone puts in enough #effort, there is no server-side way to #detect a #difference between their traffic and any "legitimate" #API #client.

25 years ago I was writing scraping software (not nefariously...) that sent plausible referer: headers, paused appropriately between requests, operated from a widespread set of machines, etc.

The techniques have only gotten better and more widespread since, and it's even easier to apply them to an API.

Seems Clop ransomware's Linux variant leaves the RC4 keys in plaintext.

But would that have mattered if your organization got hit? Do you have more than just Linux systems? Would you have the wherewithal to act on that flaw in their software anyway? My guess is no.

For your organization I expect your winning move is to not play their #WarGames. Knowing that #Protect fails, making sure you have a robust #Detect, #Respond, and #Recover capability is crucial to eliminate or limit the impact of these events.

Rackspace is saying that their "#Protect" capability (see NIST #CSF) failed because this attack was built on a zero-day vulnerability. (A vulnerability that has not been disclosed, or has been disclosed but has no known mitigation or fix).

So when Protect fails, #Detect, #Respond, and #Recover capabilities have to be ready to shine. In this case, it seems they weren't. This is typical in many companies - Rackspace isn't alone here. This is in part because Protect often relies primarily on tools doing their jobs, while the others: Detect, Respond, and Recover rely much more heavily on people.
