“I think one of the things about later Chandler is this awful performance of masculinity that feels very wrong. […] I like early Marlowe when he’s comfortable with his flaws and his weaknesses. There’s a much softer Marlowe in there and a much more likable Marlowe.”

—Denise Mina on being the first woman to continue the story of Raymond Chandler’s foundational detective

“Questions of identity permeate her novels. […] Masks and the identities they hide run through her work like the unifying thread in a tapestry.”

“Gordon Daviot” was courted by Hollywood; “Josephine Tey” was ‘the crime writer’s crimewriter’; & “F. Craigie Howe” might have become a household name too if Elizabeth MacKintosh—the Inverness writer behind all three pseudonyms—had survived beyond her 57th year

“In 1990, the UK Crime Writers’ Association issued a list titled ‘The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time.’ Number one on the list was THE DAUGHTER OF TIME by Josephine Tey. It was a good call then, it’d still be a good call now.”

I must have read hundreds of books of the golden age detective genre in my time, but none with a more bizarre solution than 'What Happened at Hazelwood' by the normally reliable Michael Innes. So preposterous as to be risible. 😂

Been having so much fun reading "Shadows of Athens", the first of the classical Athens detective series of books about the playwright/amateur sleuth Philocles, by J.M. Alvey (aka @JulietEMcKenna). Absolutely superb. :D Only problem is I want to do a readthrough of "The Builders" now... ;-)
