I started writing that thread on Twitter and it was meant to be a couple of tweets, not an entire thread, and once again, here I am with an entire thread.

Just to try and ward off questions that may come up (most likely in bad faith, but... who knows), I'll try and pre-empt them:

1. "So you want to ignore the stories of #detransitioners?"

No. The experiences of "detransitioners" can be informative as to where the system might need improvements.

Where I object to detransitioners is when their experiences are used to justify removing the system completely.

2. "What about autistic kids? They're just confused!"

Are they? Are they really? Or do you infantilise us and assume that because *you* can't understand what it's like to be autistic, we can't understand ourselves?

At this point in time, the research I've seen appears to show a statistical correlation between being autistic and gender variance. Correlation is not causation.

Anecdotally, a much-higher-than-expected number of trans folks are also autistic.

That doesn't mean we don't understand our gender.

It might just mean we don't experience our gender in any way that you can understand (much like our experience of the rest of the damned world). (4/?)
