One of the moths of the summer. Jersey Tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria) spotted by my eagle-eyed daughter on the Southwest Coastal Path near Berry Head in #devon
One of my favourites as it was pictured on the front cover of the Observer Book of Larger Moths I had as a kid.

This Sunday I’m leading a virtual battlefield tour of #Devonshire trench, following the action of 8th and 9th Bn Devonshire Regiment on first day of the battle of the #Somme. Really looking forward to sharing the stories of some of the men who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Work on our #Devonshire regiment tour continues, and it feels appropriate today to share this photo of #CWGC Devonshire #Cemetery from circa 1920. As you can see, the Cross of Sacrifice has been erected but the original grave markers are yet to be replaced. This pic also gives a clear view of the land over which the #Devons advanced on 1st day of the Battle of the #Somme and just how exposed they were. #WW1 #Histodons @militaryhistory #MilitaryHistory

Sharing stories of the #Devonshire regiment on the #Somme ahead of my virtual #battlefield tour on 27th Nov. Love this photo of Captain Duncan Lenox Martin, who famously made a plasticine model of the area around Mansel Copse to show just how exposed his men would be to #German MG fire. Martin was proved tragically right, as he was killed along with many men from 9th Devons early on 1st July in the ‘Danger Zone’ he had identified. #Histodons #MilitaryHistory #WW1 #Devon @histodons
