Amazing story about a deep sea octopus nursery off Vancouver Island in Hesquiat Territory.

A very nice day 😎 today for some on the Fisheries and Oceans Canada () R.V. Cisco within Harbour. The team from Buffalo State is out collecting benthos with Ponar sampler and drop-down camera (Benthic Imaging System) to complement our monitoring project looking at zooplankton and phytoplankton in the Harbour, which is impacted by (low or no oxygen) during the summer.

I found 5 (likely there are additional smaller ones) from (CCGS Limnos), EPA Lake Guardian, USGS Kaho, MNRF Ontario Explorer and NYDEC Seth Green. I am not surprised that was required to step in to close the fishery for juvenile (whose populations are at threat) in the Canadian maritimes. The market is ridiculously profitable ($5000/kg), and poaching has become a serious issue. With the poor regional economy, black-market and organized crime connections, violence naturally follows.

The 🇨🇦🇺🇸 cruise is moving along nicely on the CCGS . The stations off Oswego, NY take a little longer because these are the deepwater stations for Lake Ontario with max depth of 244 meters (802 feet). These are stations where we will most likely catch Mysis diluviana, an important . We should be done the US waters stations by end of today and move to the north shore to complete the survey.

The CCGS is busy and full! There are 14 scientists on board from and plus the Coast Guard crew. It is also *HOT 🔥 with the air temperatures over the ridiculously near 30C in April! The engineer rigged up an extra air duct to keep our incubators we use for algal primary productivity cool, because we need to have the water at lake temperature, which is 4-7C. Limnos is currently sampling the deeper stations off Rochester, NY. 🇨🇦🇺🇸
