So I'm plodding through Lawrence's "Women in Love" (mainly to see if I still dislike it as much as when I read it 30-ish yrs ago*) and I find this line:
"I don't want any more of your meretricious persiflage". (Ch 13).

Well that had me reaching for a dictionary, right there.

meretricious:
1. gaudy, tasteless.
2. of or about prostitutes

persiflage:
1. banter, raillery
2. frivolous banter

Oh Lawrence, you're such a charmer.
