To "throw a rock in a haystack". This is a new for me, and I can't find any references to it in Google books or on the web in general. is from , so maybe it's a saying in considering the states activities. It implies to me that one is making a commotion to get whatever it is one wants to come out of talk.

I've recently noticed a pronunciation in American English of auxiliaries/modals ending in [d] with a cliticized negative particle, where the [d] is dropped and the negative particle is pronounced with a schwa-like sound – so, for example, _couldn't_ is pronounced /'kʊnət/, _didn't_ is pronounced /'dɪnət/, and so on. I'm wondering whether this is a new thing or whether I've just never noticed it (it seems to be rare). Anybody familiar with AmE know more about this? @linguistics

TIL that some speakers inflect the “on X's behalf” construction for plural, labiodental voicing and all, and it's truly blown my mind

never ceases to amaze

An ancestor of mine, Archpriest Francesco Paulo Caputi did one of the first studies in looking at the same story told in each from the 5 villages in the upper Agri Valley of . The differences in each reflect the very different political histories of each village.

I just heard an American using the word *pianist*, and it only had two syllables! 🙀

I’m used to someone, like me, who plays the /ˈpʲæ.no/ being called a /ˈpi.ə.nɪst/

But – and I don’t know how I’ve never heard this before – now I know that an American might call me a /ˈpʲæ.nɪst/

Not sure what would happen to words like pianism and pianistic though 🤷‍♀️

what word would you use for yawning? 'gape' (meaning 'be wide open') was borrowed from Old Norse, but then shifted in some dialects to mean 'yawn' in the 15th century.
