I'm watching #Outlander and the story has hit 1776. There is someone in the colonies using thee and thou even though no one else really is and she said, "Thee is generous," and just ... WTF kind of construction is that? Why is she using the dative thee instead of the subjective thou? And coupled with the incorrect verb? Is this some dialectical thing that I just don't know about or is it bad writing? Either way is equally likely.

It is so confusing to me how a word about seeing through the unfairness of the system turned out to be this huge catastrophe to so many people. Talk about a game of telephone. More "woke-ism" please and hurry up about it.

Interesting introduction to why North Carolina, US is still a linguistically diverse place, the most diverse state in the USA.
But that is fading. I can tell you from moving to TX in 1981--there were still Texans with a molasses accent, slow & dreamy, and my best friend was from the Panhandle. I could not imitate her accent in an emergency to get into her phone to call for help.
But #dialects & such smooth out unless there is some kind of isolation. (2019)

Only Hokkiens can understand how hilarious this is omg.
The confusion comes because Northerners pronounce chicken differently from Southerners.
Northerners: "keh"
Southerners: "kuay"
For Southerners, Keh could mean "add" - I say "could" be cause most usually don't make that mistake.
Usually!
In the end, I always do what this guy did with non-Northerners.
Speak #Mandarin. Problem solved lol.

Doing the subtitles for these is such a chore, though filming and editing the videos themselves is fun. If you’re still following along, here’s “I”:

I find #languages - pronunciations, nuances, #etymology, et al - fascinating; the #Otherwords #PBS series is right up my alley. & it’s #ADHDFriendly, as the videos are super engaging.
#TIL that there’s a distinct connection between the #dialects of Boston, Nu Yawk, the Deep South, all centered around the letter R.
Also, this video might help you roll your Rs if that skill escapes you.

There is a concept termed diglossia worth exploring in relation to dialects of African American English used in the United States and to literacy instruction in #education.

@dubh Jenny Dent mapped out korimako dialects around Ōtautahi-Christchurch for her PhD at #LincolnUniversityNZ. Here's her figure. Jenny revealed four distinct dialects, with perhaps a fifth near the eastern end of the Port Hills.
At Lincoln, where male birds visit during the winter, we mostly get birds from Jenny's Type B and Type C dialects (Omahu Bush and Kennedys Bush).
Imagine doing this across NZ, and watching it change over time!
