Living diatoms generate about 20 to 50 percent of the oxygen produced on the planet each year, take in over 6.7 billion tonnes of silicon each year from the waters in which they live, and constitute nearly half of the organic material found in the oceans.

We've long been making incredible insights from our study of diatoms, microalgae that can be found most anywhere in the world. Their biological structure is encased in silicate shells of such a tremendous variety that it's hard to even properly categorize them.

Now, Skolkovo Institute scientists have used one species to help develop nanomechanical improvements to light, sound, and electrical devices.

Can anyone shed any light on this little mystery? Too big to be the diatom Cylindrotheca closterium, my second guess is a dinoflagellate (perhaps Amphisolenia sp.?). What do you think? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
