I have long been inspired by artist/author/musician/filmmaker/photographer Dave McKean. In the 80s and 90s he frequently used collage and diorama in his visual work, and gold foil sprayed across the images was a recurring motif (as shown in his illustration of The Star card from the Vertigo Tarot). When I started painting mica powder into my dice molds, this was the inspiration.
Yesterday I had a thought about using uv resin to create inserts for normal cured resin and naturally I thought again of McKean. Here's the result of a test run. I colored the uv resin with gold mica, spread it into little blobs and partially cured it so that it was solid but pliable, and then stuffed it into the molds before preparing the pour as normal. Pretty neat! Each die has one angle where they look really cool, especially under strong light. I might try again with less pigment in the die itself and adding more inserts to each.

latest #dicefail experiment: dab the inside of the mold with black alcohol ink. brush on grey mica powder, wipe out the excess, then do a dirty pour of white/caramel resin and gold alcohol ink. I think with the right color combination I can get something that looks like moss growing on rock or dirt?

Attempting to create dice inspired by the phrase "blood on the snow." I spattered red alcohol ink onto the molds and very gently poured white resin using a mixture of mica and ink. I'm hoping the variation of color persists, but I suspect there's a better than average chance that it'll just be uniformly pink after it cures. 😃 #dicefail #crafting #resin #dnd

Inked up the most recent couple of sets. Generally really happy with them. I wanted to use gold, yellow or brown paint for the amber set but after testing bunch of options the gold was best but totally illegible except inder direct light, so I went with boring old white. 😃

I have had just a ton of trouble making dice lately -- I took some time away because I was discouraged, and when I came back to it I wasted an entire batch of silicone trying to make new molds. So I got discouraged again and stopped.
I'm back on my bullshit now though, and have gone back to basics, rebuilding my process from scratch. I'm documenting the steps this time so I don't forget. Future posts on this thread will be followers only, so feel free to follow or ignore #dicefail.
1. buff the sides of the master die to ensure there are no finger prints, dust, etc.
2. cut a 4" square piece of book binding tape and place it sticky side up on a cutting mat.
3. place the die 1 side down on the center of the tape, using the grid to guide you. Do not reposition it! If it is off center, restart from step one.
4.Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the inside of a PVC coupler with your finger. I'm using 1.5" couplers for 20mm dice. 16mm dice will probably work with 1.25 or 1" couplers but take a (non master) die set to the hw store to measure.
5. seal the edges of the couplers using hot glue. Do not lift the coupler from the surface of the cutting mat! The tape has to stay perfectly flat.
6. Cover the top of the coupler with masking tape or whatever (don't waste book binding tape on this). this is to keep dust and debris out of it while you prep the remainders.

Finally cleared out my backlog of unpainted dice. I've been avoiding these because they all have serious flaws of one sort or another and I was disheartened. But I've been away from it for long enough that I'm ready to try again. Of course, step one is to make a new mold because the one that I used to make these sets is wonky. Wonky mold makes wonky dice.
Anyway these go into the jar of keepers but not into rotation.

@RuneCatCasting lovely! i make dice too, although I mostly make unworkable experiments rather than functional sets these days. I tag them with #dicefail for my own amusement 😃
Latest #dicefail experiments with foil inserts. These look a lot better on camera than in person! I crinkled up small pieces of the holographic paper to make these diamond-looking ones, but the effect is spoiled by having too much empty space. The effect is better on the purple tester, where I dumped half an entire sheet into resin and then stuffed it into the mold -- except in the bottom where i didn't get it into the point.

These are fascinating! I mixed pink and yellow resins using mica powder, loaded them into my mixer cup and then did a dirty pour with just a drop or two of blue ink. The result is these mottled, veiny patterns where the colors have bled into one another in some cases and held fast in others. You can see how varied they end up based on how much blue ink they get from the pour.
This is also completely unlike what I thought I would get -- I was going for solid two-tone dice with wavy bands of blue across the surface 🤷♂️

finishing up some partial sets that didn't totally work out. The first was inspired by our current #DnD campaign, The Dead Sands, which is set in a post-apocalyptic desert where the arcane blast has left behind blue residium dust. The second was an experiment with ink techniques.

more #dicefail experiments with glow in the dark pigment in which I tried to disguise the glow. My favourite is the d8 which looks semi-opaque under normal light. The d10 also looks neat -- i dusted the inside of the mold with the pink pigment and then filled it with black resin.

Today's #dicefail experiment is glow in the dark pigments!
These are fun, but I switched to a new brand of epoxy and these dice *smell terrible.* I'm hoping its the resin and the outgassing will stop as they finish curing.
Also my molds are all breaking down so time to make some new ones.

have been avoiding #dicefail for a while after some repeated failures bummed me out. But I finished up one of those failures today and ended up sith something pretty not bad. Calling these Stars of the Dead. Perfect for my grumpy professor emeritus of necromancy.
