Eigenzinnige asteroïden vormen een reëel botsingsgevaar voor de Aarde. Wetenschappers schatten dat een asteroïde van enkele kilometers in doorsnee 65 miljoen jaar geleden op de Aarde insloeg en de dinosaurussen, naast andere levensvormen, uitroeide in een massale uitsterving.

YES, the man-made tail of asteroid-turned-not-so-temporary-comet #Dimorphos is still strong three full months after the impact of #DART that created it: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=5808460945911327 (the general thinking seems to be that a substantial debris cloud was formed around the poor moon of #Didymos which is constantly feeding this dust tail thanks to solar radiation pressure - but AFAIK nobody had predicted such a long persistence of this effect).

In a press conference, NASA confirmed the success of its DART mission after ascertaining that the orbit of asteroid Dimorphos was changed by the impact of the spacecraft. According to calculations, Dimorphos now orbits the asteroid Didymos in 11 hours and 23 minutes while before the impact, it took 11 hours and 55 minutes for each orbit.

Here is a reconstruction of #DART's impact on minor-planet moon Dimorphos, as observed by the Italian cubesat LICIACube, which is in orbit around near Earth asteroid Didymos.

The reconstruction assumes #LICIAcube's camera was centered on #Dimorphos and so we see #Didymos move with respect to its moon. Without knowing the exact geometry of bodies and camera at the moment of the impact this is just one of many possibilities.

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test spacecraft (DART) collided with asteroid Dimorphos in an experiment designed to measure how much such an impact can change the orbit of an asteroid.

The stabilized animation was created with images from NASA's live broadcast and the 5 1/2min video posted on their web site. It starts the moment Dimorphos becomes visible.
