My experiences studying music in Japan were often astonishing. I chased down a teacher who claimed to be the holder of an ancient Buddhist shakuhachi tradition that had been suppressed by the mainstream musical world; his lessons were fused with a tea ceremony. I met another teacher who would only accept a student who could walk into the forest and choose a stalk of bamboo that, when it was cut down, would turn out to be in tune as a flute. (He gave me only one chance to get it right, and I failed.) In one of the main shakuhachi “lodges” in Tokyo, I came across a culture of male-dominated locker-room talk, in which some styles of playing were approved as sufficiently macho while others were denigrated as “gay.” Much of what I encountered startled me—it didn’t reflect what I’d read in books back in America about the shakuhachi.

I can't wait to watch the same thing happen to #threads and #bluesky that happened to #twitter, #reddit, #digg, etc.
Anyone that willingly uses those sites must love being used as a product, and at the mercy of whatever techbro idiot thinks he's solving a problem by giving people another void to scream into (the irony isn't lost on me here, but I'll vanish in due time as I always do) so they can double-dip by selling both your data and your eyeballs on whatever they want you to buy.

Remember #Digg? Remember how in trying to become more profitable and competitive, they completely obliterated their product within a short period of time?
I think of that a lot these days.
@renwillis I wish! But Digg is a shell of its former self. I miss Digg so much and this new Reddit debacle is bringing me back to when I had to migrate over from Digg to Reddit 🥲#reddit #digg
@ssfckdt @hughster @dtgeek @mike I had forgotten about #digg, and #revision3 and #diggnation. those were the days ...
@hughster @dtgeek @mike Hard to gauge these days. But a big part of #Reddit 's emergence on the scene was people flocking to it after being upset at decisions at #Digg.
But that was... 13 years ago.

I know Redditors didn't like @ekp, however, I did.
While she had controversies, at least she respected people and devs. I remember #KaraSwisher's interview with her. She was treated as a Scapegoat, but at least when she did have controversy, she owned it instead of Steve Hoffman trying to gaslight people. #Reddit #RedditMigration #RedditBlackout #Lemmy #KBin #fediverse #Mastodon #Digg

#reddit is digging its grave with the API pricing and showing that they clearly don't care about the users who made its platform successful. This is the last straw for many of their users, including myself. Once the Apollo app stops working, I will be deleting my reddit account and leaving the platform to whatever fate it suffers.
The #reddit community /r/videos (26.5 million subs) is cutting off posting permissions tomorrow before the blackout.
This feels like the #digg implosion all over again.

#ama with /u/spez who don't answer any pressing questions at all. This is not going to go down well at all by the likes of it. #reddit now looks like another #digg or #myspace. There's going to be a lot of refugees from this.
Also: what an a-hole that guy is.
Ok, so I guess I need to open my blabhole about #reddit.
First off: Reddit is run by people who somehow break the "don't attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity" rule by being both malicious *and* stupid. The only reason why they got successful is because #digg tried to relaunch themselves as a bizarre social networking platform and they're now a weird blogspam site.
Yes, Digg is technically 'still around', no you can't migrate back to it from Reddit.
Former Digg user (2007–2010) and Redditor (2010–2023) leaving the platform with the shutdown of Apollo. I never found my niche with Twitter, but maybe Mastodon will be different? How do I get going here? Already have @ivory
@helgztech @Wolven I agree that we need more human-curated services and I loved both #Stumbleupon and #Digg back in the day. Within five years plan I'm working on what I like to call "human augmented" search: https://github.com/davidshq/next-search
Love to hear any thoughts you might have!
So it seems that #Reddit is adamant about going the way of #Digg all those years ago and blow up any relationship and goodwill between company and users with their policy of killing of 3rdparty apps and old.reddit.com. So be it, not my 1st migration to The Next Big Thing™. Can I compare #Lemmy to Reddit, and am I able to read messages across different instances like #mastodon allows?

The death of #reddit is a good opportunity to embrace discussion on traditional, specialized community forums instead. Better knowledge sharing and sense of online community. Use Tapatalk to discover new forums and keep them all in one place. #digg #tapatalk #thinkpad

When the big community site Digg underwent a huge overhaul, countless unhappy users went off to the much smaller Reddit. Reddit, billing itself as The Front Page Of The Internet, then grew massively.
Now Reddit is going to charge a massive fee to use its API, killing off third party mobile apps like RIF. There's now a lot of unhappy users threatening to leave coz the Reddit app isn't all that.
So I'm wondering what will be the #Reddit to Reddit's #Digg?
#Mastodon?
