For writers and researchers, social media often seems not only to be about sharing things or promoting something, but to be a part of your work process, trying out ideas, connecting around it.
But this also means part of your work is locked in these platforms. This becomes a practical problem after a while, due to a lack of overview. E.g. on tumblr you can navigate your archive through hashtags, on instagram you can't.
Recently I exported my instagram data (which has become possible because of Art. 20 of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which is the „Right to data portability“), imported the posts into obsidian-markdown, now I have a local version as a digital archive. These are my 1.2K insta posts arranged by their hashtags.
Exporting my account data from Instagram not only gives me a backup of my posts, but allows me to work with them as categorized notes.

Hello #digitalArchives friends, tis I again. Someone somewhere allows on-site forensic investigations of their born digital material and has the rules outlined on what the researcher can take with them. The problem is I have forgotten who! Any leads?
(I don't know where everyone is these days, so also posted this on the bird site)
When people say that things live on the internet forever, the digital preservationists have always told us that's not true. The important stuff is hard to keep. People just like to keep the embarrassing stuff around (Lots Of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe).

Well, it's hard to believe I'm now sitting in the closing keynote of the #digitalhumanities @ Oxford summer school. How did that happen?
More seriously, an hectic, thought provoking, stimulating, and rewarding week with the participants in the When Archives Become Digital strand. Its end is a moment at which I wonder what remarkable things they will go on to achieve next.

The moment when your former PhD tutor is giving a keynote at the summer school where you now teach, and there’s a photograph you never even knew existed of you as a student at a workshop from a decade ago. #digitalhumanities is both a very large and a very #smallWorld.

Arriving in Oxford for a drink with the other convenors before the beginning of Digital Humanities @ Oxford Summer School ‘23 tomorrow.
A deep breath needed before the plunge into I hope will be an intense, rewarding, and thought-provoking week.

Check out Luna Nane‘s work! Her skills and critical thinking were foundational in #cooArchi and #artdocarchive . We need advanced tools and deeper insights for the politics of digital feeds and collections, I am very proud of our collaborations and what we archieved so far ✨

CKAN is now deemed a Digital Public Good (DPG) -- which seems deserved given the number of national governments and bodies that now use #CKAN.

I'm missing my old network on the birdsite for this kind of query. Any #archaeology and/or #digitalarchives folks out there with recommendations on curating Ground Penetrating Radar datasets (DZT, DZX)? Challenges: they are v big & proprietary, we don't even have the software to read them in native format. I'm not even sure whether we should accept or recommend curation elsewhere.
After several meetings on DH #infrastructure (e.g. how to organise shared access to GPU-clusters?), supervising two #PhD candidates (on #distantviewing #Newsreels and on interdisciplinary #digitalScholarlyEditions, preparing for a presentation on #srmanticweb and #regesta if #medieval #charters (#diplomaticsrulez), teaching #Persona methods to a DH course on the example of #endangeredlanguages #digitalarchives and conversion of book #indices into #factoid #prosopography I finally conclude my #dayofdh2023 #dayofdh with bottle of beer ...

I am curious about Digital Archives and Digital Preservation.
What are some urgent or unsolved problems in that space?

This weeks blog post is on why we need to Integrity check. Alongside explaining when and how to checksum, we provide links and resources on the best places to research which algorithms, software and workflows will work best for your specific archival situation. Catching up on my edification. That includes this podcast. This recent episode is a terrific exploration of web archiving and digital preservation -- and how many related problems are ultimately people related. Recommended listening, folks!
"This week we have two researchers to talk about web archiving, its politics, its goals, & how web archiving is often mobilized to address problems it really can’t help."
