🧵 2/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO I often get asked about how to quickly search through (handwritten) archival documents. Depending on how many documents we are talking about, there certainly are quicker ways then reading them! But setting up a workflow for #Digitisation, #AutomaticTextRecognition #QualityAssurance aren't done quickly either! Accessible tools like #Transkribus can help a lot here, but they can't do magic. So: plan enough time for these tasks and don't expect 100% accuracy!

First go trying the new English GRO digital images system for birth and death certificates. Not a great result! Cropping + a tilted copy means I've been given a very incomplete copy of my granddad's birth certificate. @KottalGenealogy @genealogy @geneadons One of my favourite mementos from my early #Genealogy days is a 1980s list my 1C1R Hilde gave me of my ggf Heinrich's children (and grandchildren). She knew '2 infants died'. I now know it was 6 across his 2 marriages. Thanks to improved #Digitisation (and indexing) of vital records over the past 5+ years, more and more stillbirths/infant deaths have become visible in my #FamilyTree. It's a sad but important discovery every time.
