Hij overleed in 2006 toen hij 32 jaar was, drie dagen na zijn verjaardag en drie dagen na het uitkomen van zijn tweede soloalbum. Dat album had hij Donuts genoemd, want hij hield van donuts. Zijn carrière was net als zijn leven, tragisch gezien, kort. Maar desondanks mag hij worden beschouwd als één van de meest invloedrijke hiphop-producers ooit. J Dilla, echte naam James Dewitt Yancey, ontwikkelde een geheel nieuwe manier van beats maken, waarmee hij veel hiphoppers, jazzmusici, en neo-soulartiesten wist te inspireren. Hij veranderde de muziek.

Currently reading Dilla Time by Dan Charnas. It's one of the most fascinating books on music I've ever read, taking in music theory and history through the lens of one musician.

There's one page which explains the impact of blues and jazz on basically all modern music more succinctly and brilliantly than anything I've read before. Eg: the jazz club history of the Cavern seems (to me anyway) to be overlooked in the story of the Beatles when it should be core to it.
