“The increase in interactions between humans and dingoes on K'gari have been driven by the explosion in tourism. Regular visitors to K'gari say the increase in negative interactions is driven by tourists ignoring dingo-safety warnings."

QLD Parks & Wildlife will decide today wether or not to kill some of the threatened of 'gari - after woman was injured in a confrontation a start of the week. Thankfully the decision was not an immediate knee jerk reaction, and there has been time for the cooler heads of the rangers and traditional owners to become involved and find a better way.

Being attacked by dingoes is terrifying and thankfully she was was rescued by a passer-by who managed to get her into a ute and off to safety.

That said, humans don't get to play Judge Judy and Executioner. K'gari is their home, and one of the precious few places where dingoes are (supposed to be) safe from harm by humans. Let's not get into an eye for an eye vengence fest against a species who are just living their lives. Leave them in peace, and if we wish to keep people safe from confrontations with dingoes, either learn to play by their rules, or stay away from their home. K'gari is their refuge, not our playground.

From my colleagues down the corridor at UNSW who have been collecting and analysing ear clips of dingoes and wild dogs

"Research suggests that more than half of Australia’s dingoes are genetically pure, not hybrids"

TL;DR they use a better DNA testing method, and find that Australia has four groups of pure dingos that have differences in DNA. Plus a group of dingo/dog mixed DNA. Now to find out if the differences in DNA lead to physical differences.

in Australia are mostly known as a pest that is killed with pesticides, bullets or hung as a 'strange fruit from the poplar trees'.
Contemporary research has found that “Most dingoes in Australia are pure dingoes rather than hybrids”

“..This study encourages us to reckon with a colonial mindset and the way it influences human-wildlife conflict in this country. We need to better appreciate Australia’s amazing wildlife that precedes European colonisation, and to make better use of new and innovative tools that can allow for dingoes and livestock production to coexist more harmoniously." Since European colonisation, farmers have often viewed dingoes as the enemy, waging war against them to protect their livestock. Some graziers are now learning to coexist with theconversation.com/killing-di

I encourage everyone to watch tonight's ABC 730 report about & to reflect upon what it says about this country. Policy & actions are failing & , failing First Nations peoples & culture, & failing . There are better ways.
