Picture of the WIP, but ready to test prototype #dipole #antenna. Despite what the camera perspective suggests, it's approximately 38" overall length without being extended.
The end goal is that it will work for 20m - 6m, mounted on a fiberglass mast.

Dipoles?
Where we are going we don't need dipoles...
Today I learned a lot about #impadence #transformers. They are quite picky about some unknown things. A #Nanovna saved the day by letting me measuring before putting everything together.

So I finally got a 10 meter #dipole in the air this evening just to see if I could hear anyone. Came across some cw and I maybe heard the last part of a #qso but not really much going on. Mostly I was excited to see how my #swr was I was happy with 2:1 across the band. I was surprised about how flat it was according to my little VNA. Anyway it was a enjoyable evening playing radio!
What are folks' thoughts / resources / design considerations for an 80m OCF dipole that would be end supported (feedpoint would not supported and would have weight of 80+ feet of LMR400 coax pulling on it).
Hanging the thing would be made much simpler, and I could get it much higher, if I didn't have to support the center, but not supporting the center also complicates things, I imagine.

#dipole is up.
I miscalculated something for 80 and 160... not sure what, but... at least 40 and up work (except for 12m.. no tune on 12m...)

Haven't stretched the #dipole #antenna out this far in a long while. But after that #SolarStorm, the #MaxUsableFrequency numbers are pretty low.

A multiband #HF antenna I am considering for my home station is an off-center fed #dipole. My visceral reaction to a commercial option for one was "OK, but I know enough so far that I think I could build the same thing out of better materials for half the price."
However, being an antenna neophyte, I was also wondering if I could use a balanced feedline instead of coax. And then I found this great discussion by VE2DPE: https://www.hamradiosecrets.com/off-center-fed-dipole.html #HamRadio

So after some time spent on the roof this afternoon with a multimeter and antenna analyzer, the misbehaving #dipole is still something of a mystery. Perhaps the elements and mechanical #fatigue are playing havoc with it. It seems to be OK for 10, 15, and 20 meters but somewhat less so at 40. Maybe the traps/coils between the 20 and 40 meter segments are getting curmudgeonly. Raising one leg and fastening it to a tree instead of the house seems to have helped a little at least.
Using a #vertical #antenna meant for #mobile use in my backyard is less than ideal, but the #transmatch likes it a lot more than the #hexbeam or #dipole on my roof, at least when it comes to 10 meters. So we'll see if I can actually participate meaningfully in this evening's gathering on that band.

After some experimental review at 30ish watts, the 10 meter element on the #hexbeam needs some inspection, but the other bands seem to behave. On the #trapped #multiband #fan #dipole, however, receive is fine but my #transmatch just can’t cope on transmit. I hope that’s a #feedline problem and not an #antenna problem. Either way, I must ascend to the roof to see what’s what. Perhaps two weekends from now; next weekend is booked for #portable #operating already 😁
