Had a great time at #DIS2023 this year! I've put a text version of my paper talk up on Medium, "Broadening Privacy and Surveillance: Eliciting Interconnected Values with a Scenarios Workbook on Smart Home Cameras": https://medium.com/@richmondywong/broadening-privacy-and-surveillance-eliciting-interconnected-values-with-a-scenarios-workbook-195d437ce305
Last week I had the opportunity to present our work on "Immersive Sampling" at #DIS2023 in Pittsburgh. I enjoyed the conference a lot!
In a paper presented at the 2023 ACM Designing Interactive Systems conference, a group of researchers led by UW HCDE doctoral student @schaferj (with HCDE's @katestarbird and Daniela Rosner) used a process of design fiction, or creating imaginary, speculative artifacts as a tool for reflection and critique, to explore some of the opportunities and challenges with using participatory design in researching mis- and disinfo and online hate.

Had a blast last week at #DIS2023 !✨Though I wasn't able to attend the last 2 days, I had such a great time at the workshops, receptions, and panels I was able to see and be a part of~ Also always a joy to see my colleagues in HCI, and I hope to see everyone again next year!
Had a fantastic time SVing and presenting my paper with @katestarbird and Daniela Rosner (on how we might combine participatory design methods with misinfo, disinfo, and online hate research https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3563657.3596119) at #DIS2023! First time in-person and had so much fun :)
Live from the #dis2023 conference: our new paper on designing technology for dance and artistic productions is now available in Open Access.

Live from the #dis2023 conference, our new paper about designing technology for dance and artistic performances is available now in Open Access.
What happens when value-laden design artifacts are put into practice? Do they exercise their commitment to stated design values? @sayamindu and I now have a #DIS2023 paper that attempts to answer these questions. Also, we got a best paper award 🎉 Paper presentation tomorrow (Friday) at 11 am EDT.
I'm in and out of #DIS2023, and live in pittsburgh! LMK if you're in town and want to hang or want recs!
#DIS2023 has been a fantastic experience so far! This is my first in-person conference and I am lucky to present two pieces of work (details in thread) 1/3
Design Resources in Movement-based Design Methods: a Practice-based Characterization

The Sense, Wear and Embody session is coming next at #DIS2023, where I'll be presenting our paper Design Resources in Movement-based Design Methods: a Practice-based Characterization!
As I'll be online, I wonder if someone on site could take a picture of the presentation while it is happening in the auditorium, and then share it with me 😁
I'm not attending #DIS2023, but we've had a paper accepted that was a result of a collaboration with Somali researchers: "Exploring the Information Needs of Somaliland Pastoralists: Design Considerations for Digital Climate Adaptation Services" https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3563657.3596061
At #DIS2023, NoviaNurin is presenting our paper on how tracking tech can promote holistic "active aging" -- physical, psychological, spiritual, & social well-being, beyond medical and physical activity monitoring. Check out her talk at Rangoos 2 on Wed 14:30 (https://bit.ly/3XH9xP7)!
In the paper we created speculative scenarios to explore how smart home cameras might lead to surveillance between “primary” users who control the cameras and “non-primary users” who don’t. Such as a parent using cameras on a drone to watch their children. Participants looking at the scenarios reflected on multiple conceptions of privacy, connecting it to other social values. This suggests the need to broaden our conceptions of privacy when doing smart home research. #DIS2023
Our #DIS2023 paper "Broadening Privacy and Surveillance: Eliciting Interconnected Values with a Scenarios Workbook on Smart Home Cameras" is now out (and received an honorable mention award!)!

Talk is on Thursday morning if folks are attending.

1/10 📣 We're excited to share that our team will be presenting three papers at #DIS2023, each tackling significant issues in the field of digital interactive systems. Here's a sneak peek at the insights we'll be sharing. 🧵👇
This Friday, probably the last academic work I will have contributed to for a while will be presented at #DIS2023.
