#DisabilityPrideMonth history lesson! 📚 ♿
Did you know the 504 Sit-In for #disabilityrights took place outside ERA's former San Francisco office ❓❓
Led by Judy Heumann, Kitty Cone & strongly supported by the Black Panthers, the sit-in spread nationally & helped change federal law.

'As a black person with a learning disability, I’ve often wondered where I might fit as an activist.
'The lives and experiences of black British people like me are under‐represented in the UK history of learning disabilities.'
Great words from campaigner and self-advocate Paul Christian, shining a much-needed light.

Not surprised to find that for centuries the philosophical discourse around #blindness was mostly a bunch of sighted men talking to other sighted men about what it means to be blind 🙄

This book, "Blind in Early Modern Japan", may be of interest to followers who like #DisabilityHistory. Reading the synopsis, it seems being blind wasn't too bad back then. If you have a qualifying reading disability, you can get it on Bookshare. https://www.bookshare.org/browse/book/4884158?returnPath=L3NlYXJjaD9tb2R1bGVOYW1lPXB1YmxpYyZrZXl3b3JkPWJsaW5kJTJCaW4lMkJlYXJseSUyQm1vZGVybiUyQmphcGFu

'I do not think that this disability had any bearing on the accident.'
#ICYMI our current blog post relates to #DisabilityHistoryMonth.
We look at John Duncan's sight loss & his subsequent accident at #Thornton in #Scotland in 1930:

Arthur Pew was a lance corporal in WW1, trusted with responsibility for his fellow men.
Pew also had a learning disability.
Before signing up, he was regarded as incapable of contributing to society and was segregated in an institution.
This is an old piece for @BylineTimes but one I loved writing with brilliant campaigners at UK charity My Life My Choice.

@RWLDproject@twitter.com #AncestryHour My top tips for researching #DisabilityHistory:
1. Know/Learn what records might have clues
2. Read the instructions if possible; learn about the records so you know the significance.
3. Read the entire record so you don't miss clues.

And as we've mentioned #DisabilityHistoryMonth during #AncestryHour, needless to say #DisabilityHistory features in our project work!

It's #DisabilityHistoryMonth in the UK at the moment, so we're interested: how many of you have found disability in your #familyhistory
