She was an English painter, born in 1784, with no arms and only vestigial legs. Despite her disability, she learned to read and write, and to paint using her mouth. I am a writer, intermedia artist, ink-maker, fabric designer, and at work on a couple books + The Log Project, an NEA & Iowa Arts Council funded project about the 2020 derecho & climate change in the Midwest.

From snowdrops to bas relief.

I like to feel the shapes of leaves and flowers, to stroke grass heads, to feel the texture of bark. Bring sight-impaired, these tactile actions are part of my enjoyment of time in nature.

I am incorporating tactile elements in the local nature-inspired artworks I am creating. This includes bas reliefs of plants.

This is an acrylic painting of Pittville Park that I was working on last week - it’s nearly finished.

The larger landscapes that I am painting during my residency @thewilsonchelt will all include park benches, as this one does. Living with Long Covid means I really appreciate available seats when I am out and about.

Today is #LongCovidAwarenessDay and tomorrow will be my own three year coronaversary.

These are some of the “Breathe” artworks that I have created while living with Long Covid. They all have the word “breathe” featured in Morse code. Because I have had to relearn how to breathe properly. And because focusing mindfully on breathing has helped to calm my mind and body.

This is my latest painting in my “Breathe” series of artworks, inspired by my experience of living with Long Covid since March 2020. These artworks are abstract landscapes, skyscrapers and seascapes, all incorporating elements that represent the Morse code for “Breathe” - here the long and short vertical lines represent dots and dashes.
