Let me tell you about Lois Curtis. a Icon

Lois Curtis is a Black womam with an intellectual disability who was the force behind the Olmstead Decision. she sued the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Tommy Olmstead and the courts ruled in her favor that people with mental disabilites have a right to live in their communities instead of institutions, and have the right to live in the least restrictive setting possible

Made a fascinating visit to the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville yesterday. It has several museum galleries about its own history, the history of producing books for those with vision loss (in print and talking books), as well as a tour of its modern-day printing operations. Pictured is one of the first books printed by Louis Braille using his raised-text system.

@histodons REPAIR: Disability Heritage Collective has published a fantastic series of digital case studies on queer and trans history (as it relates to the history of disability) at a Minnesota reformatory in the mid-1900s. I'm grateful to Laura Leppink and @skpawlicki for inviting me to contribute research.

There are five story maps in the collection; they start here:

Just got access to wonderful photos of the dormitory and dining hall of the first portuguese school for blind children, Asilo-Escola António Feliciano de Castilho, founded 1888. They were on our National Archives. This is a scattered archive, the institution doesnt have anything anymore, so I have to wander around the possible sites to find the wanted documents.
