This is frequently the way any improvement in accessibility of physical infrastructure is framed:
It's end of the list.
It's about mere legal compliance rather than equity.
It won't happen until there's something like seismic instability that imperils important abled people as well.
Ooh, toilets! How long did you abled people have to wait to get toilets you could use?

Interesting to see what happens with this, especially since the clerk is being held accountable not just in their capacity as a member of an organization, but as an individual.
Many individuals within UC wilfully do the most cruelly ableist things, then hide behind UC's phalanx of attorneys. If they were held individually accountable as well, boy would things change. #UCAccessNow #DisabilityLaw #ADA

The alacrity with which both big business AND academia have jumped on board ChatGPT, Midjourney, et al shows that the fact that 33 years post-ADA most things are not even in full ADA compliance IS A CHOICE.
Academia is very quickly adopting things without ethical regulation in place...clearly their slowness to adhere to a rock bottom law is because at heart abled people feel more warm & fuzzy towards an algorithm than actual disabled human beings.

Indiana gouges Medicaid by abusing nursing home patients and shunting the money to other county priorities. The SCOTUS decision is so important because in Marion County 90% of the nursing homes are run by the county.
Talevski's father was doped by the nursing home, something that is common to "pacify" patients. He was transferred to numerous places in order to make him and the family easier to control. By this time he could no longer speak English, only Macedonian his native tongue.
Talevski, though an attorney, was not a litigator, but was determined to fight this. #ADA #DisabilityLaw #Ableism #Accessibility

Maria Town is recounting the experience of trying to vet a restaurant to make sure it's accessible for a gathering of her friends. She tried to find out online but couldn't find an answer so she called via phone. The phone had a voicemail mssg saying she'd be contacted by an AI chat bot instead.
She hoped she'd get detailed accessibility information from the bot, but she got "Naturally, ADA is the law and therefore we are compliant" (paraphrase by me).
The ADA didn't just naturally happen. (And if you believe that bot about the restaurant's accessibility, there's a bridge for sale...)
She's speaking of going to the movie theater to see "Barbie" with her kids, having bought a "wheelchair ticket", only to find the single elevator at the theater was broken. They didn't say that on the phone or website. They even sold her the "wheelchair ticket" without mentioning that. She had to sit outside waiting while her kids saw the film. #Ableism #ADA #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityLaw

Today is the 33rd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law and the 3rd anniversary of the release of the UC Access Now Demandifesto.
The Demandifesto was sent to Gov Newsom, the UC Board of Regents and every UC chancellor. If you've got a moment, email/call these folks to ask them how much they've moved on the Demandifesto Action Steps or whether they just prefer to use public $ to fence out disabled members of the public from UC?

The 33rd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law is this Wed, July 26. Question for abled people:
What are YOU doing to honor this not just by meeting ADA minimums, but planning for highest common denominator accessibility by default?

What we put up with from domestic airlines in the US will never cease to amaze me. Just outrageous garbage. I mean, bathrooms are not even accessible for disabled people on domestic flights.

University of California getting sued for ADA violations AGAIN. You know, it would be better for the public all 'round if you'd just follow the Demandifesto Action Steps and make yourselves accessible once and for all. Cheaper, less wasteful of time, and most importantly - the ethical and humane thing to do.
