What actions could a university take to make things better for #disabled staff and students?
Is there something you've seen done well, or wish for?

Its now clear that #VoterID requirements in local election caused impediments to #voting along #racial lines & also impeded voting by the #disabled.
The review suggests Voter ID is a 'poisoned cure' to a minor problem; but of course, this was not a bug, but a feature of the policy.
As I said, #RishiSunak is criticising #China for interfering with #democracy in the UK, mainly because that's the #Tories job!

Found out today our ISP was assigning us an #IPv6 address that the rest of the Internet thinks is in the #shithole state of Virginia (of all fucking places)!!! Well guess what, if you can't even properly assign me an IP that's in my home state, and not some ass-backwards, internet-regressive place like Virginia, then you can count me out of your little IPv6 transition... #disabled #IPv4FTW

#Covid19's back, you say? As #disabled and vulnerable people know all too well, it never went away
The government’s policy is to pretend we’re getting ‘#BackToNormal’. The result is millions of us live in fear of losing our lives

"I'm so excited to finally be able to share this with you all. It's a zine, with poetry and practical tips for newly sick and #disabled people. The zine is free online. I wanted it to be available to anyone who needs it or could use it. You can read it all here:
"You can also buy it as a physical zine for £5 plus shipping:

(it's very shiny and A5 size)
Please share as widely as you can with anyone you think could use it."
Another great list from @fivebooks I read Sanatorium by Abi Palmer when it was published as an e-book but it’s now also available on audio through Spiracle Audiobooks. And Sea Bean is already on my reading list | ‘Living with a long-term condition or #disability is difficult, says Polly Atkin, the author of Some of Us Just Fall. Those affected often feel isolated, misunderstood, or frustrated by their interactions with the medical establishment. But books about #ChronicIllness will remind you that you are not alone; here, she recommends five memoirs that offer insight into the "kingdom of the unwell."

@FractalEcho @vivsmythe Though I am unable to read your linked research, I am not surprised to see that you have a PhD in Philosophy and are currently a member of faculty at Rutgers? That information gives some insight.
It is a moral and ethical dilemma that global society has made decisions regarding the current pandemic that will increase deaths for a minority of the world population.

"Disabled people are expected to 1) cope cheerfully and positively accept their role as #disabled person; 2) pull ourselves together, minimizing the effect of #disability on our activities & colleagues; 3) strive to improve our condition & “get well” (if you think this seems diametrically opposed to expectation 1, you’re not the only one); 4) look after yourself with as little support as possible; 5) focus on recovery to return to or maintain employment"

It's great news that my university has now moved from requiring #disabled students to present each professor with accommodation letters to automatically notifying professors in every class a student is registered for. Anything that minimizes the burden on learners that's added onto the disability itself is good in my book.

I thought this was very good

"When people think about #disability or #chronicillness, they tend to do so in a very black and white sort of way: Either you are completely #disabled, or you are not — this is your permanent status, and your disability (or lack thereof) will affect you the same way today as it will tomorrow.
Were it only that simple"

Saying the passenger chose not to fly?
Not having access to your mobility equipment is not a choice. ‘Oh that’s fine I’ll just leave it here…’ no no Ryanair this was not a choice. This was staff not doing their jobs.
Appalling behaviour. Unacceptable.

@AlwaysInFlannel I wonder this more & more lately, even as I'm glad for acclimation to the fediverse, there are still more than a few from the #disabled community (such as it was) on Twitter that I miss.
Finally got my stomach calmed down enough to keep an edible down, and that has helped calm matters further, though I can tell I'm not out of the woods yet. Amazing how one's attitude improves when one is no longer feeling like crap, eh? Now for a very calm evening of rest and relaxification.

Seems like another good day to remind everyone what the #GOP are and have been for quite some time. Anyone remember Bob Dole "wheeling" into Congress for the UN Treaty on Disability Rights? I do. They all applauded him and then voted NO. Hauntingly, almost 11 years later, reading John Kerry's words..."it needs to be a wake-up call about a broken institution that's letting the American people down." #Disabled How many have been kicked off #Medicaid now? Some illegally?

Many Autistic and other disabled people like/need to have lots of information when visiting somewhere for the first time
I always check Street View* before going anywhere I haven’t been – and if there are interior photographs, so much the better
So it’s really nice to read about a train operator, Newcastle-based Lumo, offering online 3D tours of their trains: https://www.lumo.co.uk/who-we-are/virtual-tour 💜
Not sure what happened to the end coach though! 😳
