If you hold an inaccessible science event where disability is the topic? You badly need to figuratively look at yourselves in the mirror and figure shit out. #DIsabledAndSTEM
Tagging #Botany #PlantScience #DisabledAndSTEM into this as I ran out of room.

Here's the thing: I'd love to be passing on word of botany/plant science events but the vast majority of them are inaccessible...have made 0 effort when it comes to accessibility to #DisabledAndSTEM
So I tend not to RT them when I see them, nor create original posts for them as I used to.
How long will the majority tolerate being exclusive of marginalized scientists? And keep circulating career opps to the "elite chosen" to take advantage of? #PlantScience #Botany

Autism/ND seems to be the more palatable type of disability, where STEM is concerned. Emphasis on "seems" as this is based just on anecdotal evidence from social media.
Still, it seems like it's the kind of disability that STEM academia seems to feel it can monetize. As opposed to other, "less profitable" disabilities...
Sadly, this plays into an already-existing tendency in the disability community to silo.
@eLife For equity, the alt text/image description of that table needs to give screenreader users the same information that sighted readers are able to get from the image.
What's currently there functions more like a caption. #DisabledAndSTEM
Re last boost: Dr. Anne K. Logan, viticulturalist, had to invent a number of ASL signs for plant science as she was doing her time through grad school. #DisabledAndSTEM
I was slated to be part of a panel on Sunday as part of #APSPlantHealth 2023
I just got word the session is canceled (possibly rescheduled in Fall) due to some questions about the accessibility of the panel itself as well as an injury that was preventing a panelist who'd planned to attend in person from attending that way.
I applaud the organizers for wanting to do this panel in a more thoughtful & inclusive way and being willing to work on that.

Welp, I was going to register for a conference except they dumped it all into Whova instead of using a more open approach to doing conferences online.
I do NOT want to have to sign a new TOS and download an app to attend a conference online. We already have tools we all use that could serve. #DisabledAndSTEM #Science #Accessibility

If you're attending APS Plant Health this year, I'm speaking on a "panel". Despite it being about barriers to accessibility in STEM, the disabled speakers speaking online were relegated to pre-recorded talks.
So I've worked hard to try to get a HUGE subject down to 15 min slide deck. "A Change of Mind: The biggest barrier to accessibility is how we’ve been trained".
Emily May Armstrong & Breanne Kisselstein also speaking.

Please boost as I'm still looking to find my community here.
#Introduction I'm a disabled non-traditional Masters student with BA in Art, but doing the Masters in plant science. I tend to do qualitative (old school natural sciences & pomology) and interdisciplinary work. Because it's unavoidable as a disabled student - I'm also a disability rights activist and public speaker on disability issues in addition to carob, street trees, and horticulture. @academicchatter #DisabledAndSTEM

Invited to be a panelist at APS, but instead of a live panel with equity between those at the hotel venue and those online, I found out late in the game I need to pre-record a 15 min talk.
I have SO MUCH to say on the topic of barriers to disabled people in STEM (the subject), but it's much harder to select which things to address when I'm not responding live to fellow panelists and to the audience.
Not the first time a panel on accessibility itself had accessibility issues. #DisabledAndSTEM
When audience is asking a question and they don't have a mic (why doesn't the audience have a mic), remember to repeat the question into your mic. This is a good place for the moderator/introducer to step up because the speaker may be very focused on their presentation and this isn't yet an ingrained accessibility habit for us. #Botany2023 #DisabledAndSTEM

Lots of people continue to support Musk and the values he brings to Twitter/X.
I'm trying to build value here by livetweeting as best I can as an online attendee given 2nd class status. #Botany2023 #DisabledAndSTEM
They just announced a couple different kinds of swag for in-person attendees. When I was planning the online mixer for disabled & ally attendees, I was told there could be no swag.

This session has a Q & A period. However, online attendees have no way I can see to submit questions. #Botany2023 #DisabledAndSTEM
Planning conferences where those who cannot attend in-person for accessibility/health reasons do not have any online equivalents for networking & career development keeps disabled people out of STEM...which is just fine with ableists.
If you're not ableist, you need to be speaking up and working on these issues alongside #DisabledAndSTEM. #Botany2023
So if you think someone just likes being cranky, consider for a moment that going through innumerable micro-and macroaggressions as a disabled person, seeing one's taxes, tuition, fees, registration $ etc. go to build things meant to screen you out might possibly test your patience a great deal. #DisabledAndSTEM
Can you read what's on that slide? Would you say it's more important for the camera operator to show us the speaker's face & body or to show us the slide?
Note there are no captions I could find. Anyone who's Deaf, hard-of-hearing, has audio processing disorders, or for whom English is not their first language will have trouble without that accessibility in place.
We need to rethink turning over online conference production to third party vendors, IMO.
