"Emergency department visits per 100,000 population during concurrent 5 day heat wave and blackout events in Atlanta Phoenix (by scenario)" - If I am reading this correctly, Current day blackout with 5 day heatwave in Phoenix models 56,486 visits per 100,000 people -- assuming no mitigation (ie cool roofs, street trees), and temperatures at current day (vs. future). #heatwaves #heat #DisasterPreparation #disasters https://pubs.acs.org/doi/epdf/10.1021/acs.est.2c09588

A must-read for California residents. Superb reportage on the dangers posed to millions of people when dams and levees fail... and dam masters unwillingness to frankly confront the issues.
NO PAYWALL. My gift.

What's a #DisasterPreparation step you have had on your list for awhile, but just haven't gotten to? Go get that done today!
The radio comms course I took last week was very good, jam packed 8 hours of information. I did take away a few things that were unintended as part of the course. The main thing being that if the SHTF for whatever reason and cell towers/internet went down, the systems in place for radio communication is completely inadequate and if the radio comms manager wants to get anything done, they are going to have to put into place some serious hacks. It will not be a job for the faint of heart. Going against the official grain is going to be the only way to actually get things done.
That said, taking these courses is the only way to fully understand the so-called chain of command and who is more likely to be an ally and who is best to go around in a disaster scenario. As bad as all that is, the biggest problem across the board is numbers. Having a 24 hr. per day rotational radio room with time for food/hydration, emotional breaks, debriefing, while being a volunteer that also may have family impacted by whatever event is ongoing, is nearly impossible with the numbers of hams that are currently licensed and willing to be volunteers.
At least I know what we are up against now.
