It was Pharaoh—not God—that defined humans by how much they could produce.

in God, all things—including productivity—have a season.

"The words of which we hear in our reading are, frankly, terrifying. If you ever thought being a follower of Jesus was going to be easy, this passage will shatter your illusions!" My for Sunday 25 June, on Matthew 10:24-39

The term ‘accountability’ is frequently thrown around Christian circles. It fills me with unease because I think of it as giving another authority to punish me for failure. Which is why Dr. Cruickshank’s definition in her book, Ordinary Discipleship, is so helpful to me.

“But accountability is merely the ability to ask for an account of [my] actions.” (pg 143)

Got to meet and pray with some bros about our counseling ministry, where we’ve experienced God’s presence lately, and progress on a barn that will hopefully house some young men going through our program.

"If you don't know where the holes are in your theology, it means you have bad theology.".
- Alexander Sellars Downie

That was one of my dad's favourite sayings. When I was growing up, I always thought he meant it as a signal to keep learning, keep humble, read the Word more and study more.

It's only after 25 sessions of counselling and facing my own traumas and coping mechanisms that I finally get it.

What it really means is that life is too big and too complicated for you to wrap it in a simple, easy-to-understand theology and be done with it. And God is too big for our finite, human minds to figure out and predict.

Dyed-on-the-wool cessationalists can find themselves faced with prophecy or healing or gifts of knowledge or wisdom or tongues that show that God is still acting in the gifts of the Spirit. The most positive Charismatics face trauma or hurt or tragedy.

The moment our theology is cut and dried, the moment we think we've got God figured out, real life will show us the opposite.

We can deny that and wrap our prejudices and pride round us like a blanket. We can run away from the hurt and throw away our confidence, deconstructing until we find ourselves floating around with every wind of doctrine.

Or we can follow the crucified and risen saviour, the beaten but praising apostles and the martyrs, heroes and examples who have gone before us and who show us that God never leaves us and that in this world, we will have trouble but we can take heart because Christ has overcome the world.

We don't have to understand or like every bit of the journey. But we don't need to do it alone. We can walk around with our holy, holey theologies and grow to know the One who still has a hole in His side.

Church growth isn’t growth if its built with transfer growth.

Only about 2% of churches are growing because of discipleship and evangelism.

Are we really okay with that?

is (supposed to be) a religion about being in harmony with the trajectory of creation set in motion by in the beginning. The whole is about how Jesus did the work to get us back on track with that harmonious existence, dealing with our tendencies to carve our own paths and commit violence to creation. Which means that advocating for is part of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. And adjusting to be more climate conscious is a work of .

The early Church was remarkably technologically savvy. Paul used the Roman transport system extensively and referred a lot to the culture of his day. Christians were some of the first to use codices, which laid the foundations of modern books. Christians also became famous for being fans of literacy for all.

Maybe, just maybe, this is a sign that we should look at all the technological means possible to disciple people.

Cheap Grace: “The preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance … absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living & incarnate.”

Church people are still people. And people can be mean. It saddens me when I have to step in and correct behavior in adults that even teenagers understand to be inappropriate.

Case in point: when a newer attendee is sharing their professional expertise to help the church improve some tech and an older member (to their face!) runs their mouth saying junk like “you know, not everyone is going to think this is a valuable contribution.”

Good grief.

Matthew 16:24

Is Costly
Then said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me].

Hello! I'm Ed from rural Ontario Canada. I am retired and have a background in psychology (Ph.D.). I am an introvert but have been a lay leader in my local church. I am interested in Fresh Expressions, micro church, discipleship, mission, and exploring how to re-form traditional church.

I enjoy hiking, biking, reading and tech.
