Why in systems that use a semicolon to start an emoji would you use an editor that removes the space you for before a semicolon? 🤦‍♂️

And seemingly never notice what an absolute pain this and many other 'helpful' auto edits are.

@eloquence after a while the annoying badges tail off but it would be nice to be able to disable this at sign up as it is a pain in each new forum when you've been using it for almost a decade.

Another annoyance is still flagging posts as unread when it's a reply from someone you set to ignore. Handling in that area is pretty poor actually.

Otherwise it is fantastic, so I'd still choose #Discourse forum softwares over anything else.

I dislike a few aspects of the #Discourse forum #UX, especially the relentless gamification of banal user actions ("Congratulations, you just made your first poop") and its approach to categories.

I have to admit, though, that it also gets many things right, which you only really notice if you spend a lot of time with a Discourse forum. The read/post experience is quite relaxing, and the UX for keeping up with new new posts, notifications, etc. seems solid.

Not sure if sb proposed this already: wouldn't adding #paragraph numbers to #research #papers make #academic #discussion easier? Instead of: "the idea in paper XYZ on page 294, left column, 3rd §, last sentence" you could say "the idea in paper XYZ in §3, last sentence". Moreover, I see potential benefits for #automatic #document #processing and even the writing process itself: authors would maybe stick more closely to the 1-paragraph-1-idea concept. #academicwriting Are there any such approaches to improve structure in the academic #discourse?

Just out: A new paper I published with the great Tanja Carstensen in AI & Society, in which we explore how gender is negotiated in the German media discourse on AI and the future of work.

Here are some of the main findings of our analysis of 178 articles from 2015 to 2021 from German newspapers and newsmagazines:
‣ AI is portrayed as something that is shaped by society. Technological determinism is almost non-existent.
‣ The ideal worker norm is renegotiated vis-a-vis gendered artifacts such as service robots. What is the future role of women in the workforce?
‣ AI being portrayed as shaped by powerful young white men developers who are responsible for AI’s risk.
‣ It is great to see that some of the feminist and scholarly critique on AI, especially on bias and discrimination, is taken up by the media. However, we argue that this is a concept to be challenged as it masks power relations in production chains that go beyond questions of diversity, awareness and individual responsibility.

Where can I read about "The future" as #discourse element in #capitalism?

I recently joined https://discourse.org/ to talk with the microscope building community, but I really like the system.

It's like the BBS of old, with a nicer interface.

It also has this nice system of 'trust-levels' to limit user abilities and prevent harassment.

Maybe something like this could benefit the fediverse?
